We attended the timeshare presentation at The Grand Mayan, Nuevo Vallarta, MX.  The presentation was 4-5 hours long.  We decided to buy.  Upon departing, the salesman shook our hands, thanked us, then stated, "By the way, if the cops pull you over, don't go to the office.  Just give them $30-40 and they'll let you go."

The next day, we returned to the resort to enjoy a day pass.  While sitting at a red light, a police officer in the median held up the 4 lanes of traffic and made us pull over to a parking lot.  He then lied and stated that my boys, who are in their 20's, did not have their safety belts on and it would cost us $70 "or go to the office".  Since we had heeded the salesman's warning, we did not have much cash on us.  We did not tell our sons that this was a possibility so they could enjoy their vacation.  Now, I find my son begging in spanish to let us go and then he gave him the money that he had.

Upon arrival to the resort, of course we decided to cancel.  We were told we would have to return the next day.  The anxiety I experienced while returning was beyond words.  We then spent approximately 5 hours cancelling.  First we started with one understanding salesperson, then they bring in a manager; then, they make you wait for a shuttle to take you to another building where you again wait to finalize.

Lastly, even the office staff at the resort told us they keep $20-30 with their license in case they get pulled over.  It might help to take a cab instead of renting a car, as it made us easy targets.
