Make sure you know who you are dealing with before you do business, and get it in writing would be my advice.

This man does not honor his contracts. He changes the rules and tries to belittle people when they ask for their check.  The work done was on an ancient computer with an ancient database, I had five minutes training.  This is currently pending litigation.   This is how he treats disabled workers... Please do no trust this man.

Here  is the owners response:

Do what you feel is right.  I am sure that will be to your best interest for finding someone to hire you.  I told you right up front, the job was worth $500 to me.  I calculated it by how long it took me to tag 25 customers in 30 minutes and so I doubled it.  Should of only taken you 10 hrs but I gave you 20 hrs time for $500 which is equivalent to $25 an hour.  Three different times I tried to explain to you how I want it done but you never let me finish a sentence without you talking.

I even bought a new computer for you to use which cost me $1250 in which you set the computer up in your name.  Then after several days using the computer you said it was broken, it wouldn't turn on.  I came by and picked it up and took it to my office and turned it on.  I'm sorry you feel the way you do but that was a complete loss of $500 paying you but I am a man of my word and I did pay you $400 more than your worth.  You did not do as I asked cause you can't keep quiet and listen.

Seems to be a pattern of whomever asks for your services gets a whole lot more of bull crap.  I thought I was doing you a favor, even gave you half up front.  I was respectful of you, gave you rides to the store, I honestly tried to help you and this is what you give back.  If I may give you a suggestion, you really should listen to what somebody is saying to you before you speak.  You will understand a lot more that way.  Best of luck to you.  Oh and if I was to pay what you want I would have to tax you in which you would get $84 more but I never hired you, so that's not going to happen anyways.
