It started with 3 college students looking for a house to live in the next year. We found one that we liked and it was pretty cheap. So we sent our 500.00 dollar deposit as well as the 900.00 dollars for first months rent.

We waited a couple weeks and we still didn't have a lease or keys. We started getting impatient and sent emails trying to get them to send us the keys. We then were told that the keys and documents were on their way.

After waiting several more weeks then then said that there were taxes and tariffs that must be paid before they would be able to send the keys. So we sent another 500.00 to get it sent overnight. We got an eamil with a confirmation as well as a tracking number from fed ex.

A week later when we were ready to move in we still had not gotten the keys or a lease. we then got a call from the realtor saying that we had been mistaken and that we had probably been ripped off. He said he had seen a case like this before almost exactly the same.

So now were are out 2000.00 dollars don't have anywhere to live and dont have the money to put down a deposit on a different house.

Why did you sent the money directly to the "Landlord"?

It is not normal to send your funds directly to the landlord without having a lease in place already when you are working with a Realtor. In the normal rental transaction the Realtor prepares the paperwork and collects the deposit and holds it in escrow until the lease is accepted, signed and then the keys are simultaneously provided when the balance of the funds are paid.

Was this your Realtor or the Landlord's Realtor? If this is the Landlord's Realtor, you need to file a complaint with the broker AND with the state licensing board. The entire transaction does not sound right at all. Get an attorney to help you.
