I purchased H&R Block at Home premium software for $59.95. I needed it because I have rental income. I added my state tax return amount from last year, as instructed, but then the software said I needed to read and fill out a federal form 525. No help or assistance was given for this and the form is huge. If you download this from the IRS you will see that it would take a long time to figure out. It covers much more than state income. The reason I spent money on the software is so I could just enter my information and have the software do the work. All I did was enter the amounts from a state 1099 form. Why should I need to fill out this other form on my own when it should be routine. The software knew I needed to fill out form 525 so it should have asked me the required information and filled it out for me.
Because I was doing my taxes on April 15th, and couldn't finish it because I didn't have time to decipher the form 525, I tried to file an extension using their software. I went through that procedure 3 times and had to guess on how to complete it. The software directs you to page headings that do not exist. I thought this was bad but then the software required $19.95 to file the extension electronically. The outside of the box says it includes 5 free e-files (and no distinction between extensions and returns) but they want to stick you for an extension e-file. Guess what. I went to the turbo tax website and filed the extension for free. Can you believe that? H&R Block wanted to charge $19.95 after I spent $60 on their software and I didn't even buy turbo tax and filed an extension through them for free.
If you think it cannot get worse you are wrong. I tried to email them with a question about form 525. They want 19.95 to answer an email. I tried the online chat. Again 19.95 just to chat with someone. I wish I never wasted my money on this crap software. I doubt I could ever get my money back. I can't even email them to ask without paying $19.95.
