This is old but I just found this website today. So H&R Block advertises every year that if they mess up your taxes you pay nothing. Well, I know for a fact that is not true.

Fool me once shame on you:
When I filed my taxes for 2003 I made my first visit to H&R Block in Decorah, Iowa. I got stuck with a first timmer. She was kind and curtious and took tare of my tax preporations. Two days after I had been in there I reiceved a call from this woman telling me that there had been a mistake on my taxes. She had filed my taxes wrong. Because I was an independant contractor as a DJ I needed to file seperate forms for the work that I had done.

Even though I told her that I knew that she had to do this she did not listen. She assured me that what she was doing was the correst way. Hey these people are supposed to be professionals So I had lost $125 off of what I thought I was getting back. And to make matters worse I had to pay H&R Block $166 for my first preporation and an additional $120 for their mistake

Fool me twice shame on me:
Dispite what had happened the year before I went to another H&R Block to file for 2004 and asked for the manager to prepare my taxes. I figured that the Independence Iowa Office would be better. I figured a manager would make sure everything was correct the first visit. She too was kind and cutious and prepared my taxes for me. I told her about my previous bad experiance. She seemed sympithetic and asured me that it would not happen again.

I don't know if it was because of my previous bad experiance or what but I decided to look over my taxes. There it was in black and white or should I say there it wasn't. She had forgotten one of my two children (who were with me when I had my taxes done) on my EIC. I called her up immedately outraged and told the lady what had happened. She appoligized fixed the error and offered to refund half of my money.

I told her ok but then when I turned on the TV there was the ad. I called back and told her I was not happy that she offered me half of my money back when there ad said I sould not have paid anything. I ended up not having to pay for my tax preporation and even recieved a coupon for a free tax preporation for my 2005 taxes. By the way I got this after 14 phone calles to their branch office, 13 virbal fights with the branch manager, 5 threats to go to the better buisiness bureau, and 2 phone calls to my lawyer.

In closing they also advertise that if you get someone new to have their taxes prepared by H&R Block you get $10. My first year there I was brought by a person who had gone to H&R Block since they started filing taxes. He did not get anything for getting me to go there.

Receiving $10 credit

#2Consumer Comment

Wed, April 05, 2006

Not sure if you did this or not, but to receive the $10 credit, the new customer needs to bring in the coupon that is given to the existing customer at the completion of their return. Then the new customer gets a coupon discount which ought to be reflected on your receipt, and the existing customer gets their credit as a mailed rebate check. Without the coupon that has the right codes the referral isn't verified.

I haven't seen any advertising about you paying nothing if they mess up your taxes, so I cannot comment on that.
