I accepted a loan with GFS for a small amount of $225.00. After going through several hardships, I decided to enroll with a Debt Settlement Company. I notified GFS that my bank account had been closed and that all correspondence needed to go to this Debt Settlement Company and even faxed them a Power of Attorney. This was in June of 08. We did not hear anything from this company until Aug 08 where as they discussed a settlement and we accepted, to pay just the original $225.00. The company I was working with immediately sent them a check along with the settlement letter. The check was deposited and cleared by Sept 08. It is now the end of October and I have been receiving harrassing and threatening calls at work and they have also been harrassing the receptionist to try to get payment. They state they never received any money, and they were going to call my employer and file a claim against me unless I paid them. We sent them a copy of the cancelled check and my bank statement showing it cleared, and now they say we have forged the information, they don't have the money, and they want payment now and with penalties. I have been dealing with this for 3 days straight at work. Needless to say, I am getting frustrated. The Settlement company has advised them we will file a complaint with the FTC, they said "go ahead". And they will keep on calling.

Sounds like you are dealing with a collection agency - not the original creditor

IF you paid the original creditor and they never told the collection agency.

Or they did tell the CA, and they keep trying to collect anyway. They will do whatever it takes to collect bogus debts and will use harrassment to try and force payment from you

You need to find out exactly who is calling first HBS or GFS.
