I rented a car thru Hertz at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. I was not advised by Hertz at any time that the car was equipped with PlatePass-parent company is American Traffic Solutions a device which automatically pays for tolls for bridges and tunnels. I did not ask for this service and was not told about this option by Hertz at all when i rented the car. Was never given any option to activate this or reject it.

Hertz gave my credit card # to Plate Pass to charge me without my knowledge or consent. THIS IS ILLEGAL

Upon returning home i got a charge on my credit card for unspecified fee of $15.00. I called Hertz at JFK and got the run-around. Nobody wanted to answer my questions. I too have now koined the BOYCOTT HERTZ movement. I encourage everyone to BOYCOTT HERTZ until the stop scamming it's customers.

I looked on line and found numerous complaints around America from this company illegally charging people and ripping them off. How many thousands has this company ripped off consumers for.

No wonder you got the run around.  You rented a car in Phoenix yet you called JFK in New York.

Did you read your rental agreement?  Is there ANYTHING on there that states you were getting or being charged for "PlatePass"?

My guess is that there is and this is probably just another case where a person does not read what they sign.  However, IF there is NOTHING on the Rental Agreement that states you are agreeing to PlatePass or you specifically declined it then it is a simple case of disputing it with your Credit Card company.

However, if the charge is reversed and the "toll" was valid.  You are still going to owe it unless you an prove you already paid it.

It's also very interesting that this report from 2009 is nearly identical to yours:

It's interesting to note that, according to Hertz's website, PlatePass is not available in cars rented in Arizona:
