I called HP tech support on the phone.  They trouble shot the problem on my printer and said  I needed a new printer.  They just happened to have a new one they could sell me for $79.99 along with 1 year of extra warranty for $1.  During that initial phone call I told them what operating system I used and why I could not install my new printer.  The tech promised me a quick fix.
I was on the phone with them for almost 16 hours spread over 3 days.  On the third day I was told they could not fix the problem and they had nothing more to offer in the way of support or help.  I asked if they were basically dumping me and the tech said, "Yes".  They asked if I might possibly have a computer savvy friend or relative who could fix this for me!  I then asked for a manager and info on how to return the printer and they hung up on me.
I'm calling HP main office tomorrow, but I will be surprised if I get a positive or effective response.  They are evidently a high-dollar, high-profile company making their money by shortchanging customers and misleading them.  It seems their techs are poorly trained in concrete effective tech support and highly trained in evasive and stalling techniques.
I can't believe they need my little old lady on disability $80 so badly; like I don't.  I am also very disappointed that they will not foot the bill for a tech support call to my software company so that I can use their printer.  I should have foreseen shoddy customer service and questionable business practices when I found out with which computer software company they had formed a partnership.
