After purchasing a Toshiba 46" LCD television at hhgregg, I was told that if I also purchased the extended service plan, all serivce, including any questions I had after installation, then all I would have to do is call the the number provided with the serivce contract and someone from hhgregg would be at my house within 24 hours.

After mounting and installing the television, I noticed the picture was not as clear as in the store. I was instructed to update my cables, which I did, but I was still not satisfied with the picture. I then called the number for the service plan provided by hhgregg. I was told by the operator that the plan did not cover anything within the first 90 days and that I would need to contact Toshiba. I then contacted Toshiba and was told that they would send someone to my the next day. Toshiba also mentioned that they provided coverage for all parts and service, including coming to my house for one year, which, the associate at hhgregg told me Toshiba would only cover for 90 days and that is why I should really consider the extended service plan. Essentially, this means that the 3 year service plan is really not needed the first year, as everything is covered by the manufacturer.

I called hhgregg, again, to clarify what exactly the service plan covered. This time, I spoke with a really nice operator who explained that the sales associates in the store often mislead customers as to the true extent of the extended servie plan. She informed me that basically all the service plan really covers is routine maintenance and protection should something like a power surge cause damage to the television-which my homeowners insurance also covers. She also informed me that if something major would happen to the television that would require repair, for example something electronically, then someone would come to my home to verify the problem, but it would still be my responsiblity to transort the television back to the store so it could be sent off for repair.

The bottom line is this: the extended service plan at hhgregg is an unnecessary expense that is truly a waste of money. Despite what the salesperson may tell the customer, it really does not cover anything and getting a quick response, such as the promise of someone to my house within 24 hours, will not happen.
