Complaint Review: Home Depot and Citibank

Home Depot and Citibank Home Depot and Citibank illegally run your credit over and over and will cancel your account without telling you! Internet

I had a Home Depot consumer credit card for over a decade and was NEVER late on a payment.  However, Citibank apparently runs your credit over and over again (destroying your credit score because each time they run your credit, it counts against you).  My account was paid off and I was at a Home Depot ready to check-out.

I ran my Home Depot Credit Card issued by Citibank, N.A. and it declined.  I got that credit card in 1997!  The Head Cashier came over and said, "do you have another form of payment?"  The Head Cashier was very rude and snubbed her nose at me as if I was broke!

Yes, I had many other forms of payment, including cash, but I was NOT going to use them without finding out what was going on.  So, I called Home Depot (which, you are really calling Citibank).  Citibank never notified me that they run your credit over and over again (they do so every year) and had decided to cancel my account without notifying me!  The women said I was delinquent with things on my credit report (2 things) OTHER than credit cards.  So, never let anyone tell you that you can always maintain good credit with specific companies, because Citibank and Home Depot are proof that you cannot!

This reflects bad on Home Depot, as well as Citibank.  I will never shop at Home Dept again.  Lowe's is closer anyway.  There is even an anti-Home Depot website that I located and shared my own story because I did not give Citibank authorization to run my credit again, and again, I was NEVER late with a payment; because of Citibank, Home Depot lost a customer of more than 10 years.

Educate yourself on credit scoring, and read your card agreement

First of all, periodic credit reviews by an existing creditor DO NOT affect your score at all. These are known as "soft" inquiries.

"Soft inquiries" do not hurt your score at all. You got very bad information from somewhere, so stop listening to idiots.

Second, all creidit card accounts with all banks have a common clause in the card agreement that you got when you opened the account, and an updated one at least once per year since then.

It is called "universal default". This means that a default with any other creditor counts against you when they review your creditworthiness with them.

Read your contract.

Citibank never notified me that they run your credit over and over again (they do so every year) and had decided to cancel my account without notifying me!

- When you got your credit card you agreed to their terms.  Every credit card has terms that state you give them authorization to REVIEW your credit.  This includes checking your credit report.  As for the damage, even if it counted against you(which it doesn't), a single inquiry on your credit report is not going to kill you.

My guess is that you have already received, or will receive within a few days a letter from them stating that it was closed.  Would it be nice if they told you in advance that your card is going to be closed as of a certain date..yes.  Not that you would, but some people would run up the balance and just skip on the bill out of some sort of "revenge".

The women said I was delinquent with things on my credit report (2 things) OTHER than credit cards.

- They are closing accounts of people that have no delinquencies.  Credit is tighter and Credit Card companies are no longer willing to take as much of a risk as they had in the past.  So even if those delinquencies were on your report when you got the card(which they probably were not), the Credit Card company has a right to change their requirements.  If you no longer meet those requirements they have the right to close the account.

So, never let anyone tell you that you can always maintain good credit with specific companies

- Yep because who ever told you that was wrong.

This reflects bad on Home Depot, as well as Citibank

-  Seriously?  You are the one with the delinquencies.  So because of YOUR delinquencies they no longer want to take the chance on you.  Yea I think I will just let you think about that statement for a while.

There is even an anti-Home Depot website that I located and shared my own story

- I guess you missed all of the anti-lowes sites out there.
