Complaint Review: Home Depot

Home Depot ripoff My South African license is good enough to get me through US airport security, but not good enough to get a store credit at Home Depot. Cartersville Georgia

On June 29, 2003 I went to this store to return 3 items and purchase another dozen items. For the $32 defective toilet seat I had my receipt for 2 other items ($9 & $14) I did not have a receipt. I was told that I would get a store credit for the 2 items that I did not have a receipt for, this was fine with me as I had other items to get that day.

I was asked for my drivers license and presented my South African license, complete with photo, name, thumb print etc. This was not good enough as I was told that they could not put it into the computer!

The manager, who gave his name as Toby Hayes, was called and he insisted that it was "Company Policy" that I must have a U.S. drivers license! This is nowhere posted in this or any Home Depot store but rather was just made up on the spot.

My S.A. license is good enough to get me through airport security in SA, UK and USA, good enough to use as ID when purchasing a $1800 round trip airline ticket and good enough to use to rent a $20,000 Avis rent a car. But it isn't good enough to use as ID to return $25 worth of items at "Home Depot"!

IF this company does have such a policy then they have their head stuck firmly up their rears and they better get in gear and get it changed! But more likely they have an incompetent, pencil pushing moron in store manager Toby Hayes, someone who is just too stupid to sort out a very minor problem for a customer.

Anyone who is a store manager who can't find a way to make a $25 adjustment for a customer has no business being a store manager and Home Depot and CEO Robert L. Nardelli should get this guy a job he can handle. Perhaps bringing in shopping carts from the parking lot would be more his speed.

A copy of this complaint is going by mail to CEO Nardelli at the Corp Office 2455 Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta Ga 30339 and also a copy is going to Hayes in Cartersville.

let the manager now about it

You did the right thing. If you are not happy with the return policy of the Home Depot let the manager now about it.You must understand though this is the policy of the company not the manager and writing a letter to the CEO was a great idea and i support that. What i am concerned with is that all return policies should be displayed so there is no confusion. It doesn't matter what you return (toilet seat,ect.). You were unhappy with the product and i'm glad you returned. The dollar amount of the return is not the issue the policy is. Hopefully this policy does not stop you from shopping at the Home Depot because we value your business. Either way i thank you for addressing your concerns. Without this constructive critisism the Home Depot can not address this problem.

It's posted in every Home Depot what the return and check cashing policy is. You're lying when you say it isn't. When people point this out to you on this website, the only acceptable response from you is a humble apology before you return to your life of obscurity shining shoes in South Africa.

Second of all, Georgia law says "New Georgia residents must apply for a Georgia driver's license within 30 days. All other licenses must be surrendered prior to issuance of a Georgia license and proper identification will be required." Anyone who flashes a foreign DL and expects it to be no problem is both a dumbass and a lawbreaker.

Third, IF YOU DO WORK FOR THE STATE DEPARTMENT AS A JANITOR, THEN WE'RE YOUR BOSSES M*****F*****! WE GET TAXED TO PAY YOUR $7 AN HOUR WAGES! DON'T FORGET THAT! SHOW SOME RESPECT TO YOUR BOSSES OR YOU'LL BE DOING PAINT CLEAN-UP ON AISLE FIVE AT HOME DEPOT WITH YOUR TONGUE, AND TOBY HAYES WILL BE DOING THE INSPECTING!

OBVIOUSLY YOU DO NOT KNOW MUCH BECAUSE I HAPPEN TO BE A BLACK WOMAN INDEED! HOW ON EARTH DID YOU GET THE MISCONCEPTION THAT I AM OUT TO INSULT THE BLACK POPULATION?

I BELIEVE THE DISCUSSION AT HAND WAS THAT OF YOUR *** USED STINKY TOILET SEAT *** WHICH YOU HAD THE AUDACITY TO RETURN TO THE STORE FOR A REFUND. HAVE YOU LOST SIGHT OF THE ORIGINAL REASON YOU POSTED ON THIS MESSAGE BOARD??? FOR THE RECORD, I THINK IT IS INCREDIBLY DISGUSTING, AND QUITE A HEALTH HAZARD, THAT YOU WOULD ATTEMPT TO RETURN SUCH A CONSUMABLE ITEM.

EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT THE HIDEOUS AIDS EPIDEMIC IN SOUTH AFRICA. YOU ARE COMING FROM A COUNTRY WHERE MORE PEOPLE ARE DYING FROM AIDS THAN ARE HEALTHY.

AND YET YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO RETURN SOMETHING THAT MIGHT POSSIBLY BE RESOLD TO AN UNSUSPECTING PERSON, PUTTING THEM AT RISK FOR WHATEVER DISGUSTING DISEASES YOU HAVE IN YOUR BODY!!! GROSS!!!

Apparantly you have a problem with Black people out there in Nebraska.

If between Klan meetings you happen to check back to this site and read this you will find out that I am a 'white' American who works for the U.S. State Department and my last posting was South Africa.

Your pathetic post is unfortunately typical of a segment of our population that gives all of us a bad name overseas.

If you should ever wonder why U.S. Citizens are not always beloved and fawned over by citizens of other countries it is because of attitudes like that which you expressed in your reply.

Just stay at home in your double wide in Nebraska and go to your Klan meetings. It will keep you busy and out of the way of the rest of us.

Perhaps you should have greased up your 300-lb ARSE since apparently you spend quite a bit of time sitting upon your throne! Then perhaps the "finish would not start to wear." If you think $31 is a "premium price," well let me tell you, YOU ARE IN AMERICA NOW. Get over it! This is not Africa where you huddle with your tribe members and take a crap out in the jungle.! Such hogwash!

Try Reading The Report Before You Post A Stupid Comment

Even making allowances that your from Idaho and probably not real bright to start with you should at least be able to read (or have read to you) the persons complaint BEFORE you rush off to make a stupid comment.

The poster DID return the toilet seat as he had the receipt for the defective item! The 2 minor items he had problems with were other items.

Where do you get off mouthing off about someone who returns a defective item 4 weeks old that is guaranteed for 'life'. It dosen't make any difference if it is a toilet seat or a pair of shoes. And just in case you don't use toilet seats out there in the woods, $31 is a pretty expensive toilet seat. I just replaced 2 and paid $13.99 each for them, there are some at $10 and apparantly some at $31.

The kind of person who returns a 'used toilet seat' is one who paid $31 for it 28 days before and had it's finish start to wear through during the 2nd week.

The kind of person who returns a 'used toilet seat' is one who dosen't like to buy defective merchandise at a premium price which has a 'lifetime' guarantee.

I just have one thing to say in relation to your post - what kind of person tries to return a used toilet seat? eewwww, gross....

I am so glad Home Depot did not accept the return. They just prevented some innocent customer from getting home with a seemingly new toilet seat only to find out that it had already been sat upon and soiled. And if you read the big tacky orange sign at the returns desk, it DOES say that you need a US driver's license, military ID, or non-driver ID.
