On September 22, 2007 we made an appointment with one of the stores kitchen and bath designers, after four grueling hours of working with the designer, we came up with a new full kitchen design and ordered the materials.

We gave the store rough measurements but paid the extra $100.00 for a Home Depot "expert" to come out and verify measurements. We received the new cabinets on October 4, 2007. We had arranged for the cabinets and kitchen appliances to be installed by a contractor. We found out that six of the cabinets had been ordered incorrectly based on the original floor plan not the floor plan where the "professional" came out to measure. We also chose a style of cabinets that we liked but only because we were told by the designer that the "clear" glass in them could be changed. We received the cabinets with clear glass.

At first Home Depot was not going to do anything. They said we signed the the order documents so it was our fault. When I asked why the glass in the cabinets were "clear" I was told that it was an oversight by the designer and it would be an additional $700.00 for the glass to be changed. We would have never selected that cabinet design if we knew the glass would not be changed or it would be an additional $700.00 to do it. I explained that I had signed whatever the designer had put in front of me after four hours and that I was not a designer, a contractor, or a cabinet maker. That's why we used their "design professionals."

After fighting for it the store agreed to order the correct cabinets but it would take additional time so we had to put our contractor on hold. On November 19,2007 the new cabinets finally arrived thus our Thanksgiving was ruined.

In the meantime our appliances were also arrived and we had to return the fridge because it had an electrical short. Our kitchen finally got installed December 14, 2007 but not completely because the designer forgot to order some finishing pieces which we are still waiting on to be delivered. I will have to say they did add these at no extra charge but still the glass issue is unresolved and Home Depot says that they will pay for half of the glass to be replaced if I take the doors to someone they suggest. I talked with my contractor and he says they are still ripping me off because he could get the glass much cheaper.

Now for the granite that we paid Home Depot to install... They did not install a sub top under the granite so there is nothing but the granite to secure the dishwasher to. The company that Home Depot uses changed the thickness of the granite so they say that's why there was no sub top put down. My contractor does not want to accept responsibility in order to drill holes in the granite nor does the granite company or Home Depot want to do anything, so there is still no resolve.

So here it is January 7,2008 and I still have a kitchen the is not finished. I went as far as to write a letter to the President and CEO of Home Depot to let him know about the problems and how unhappy I was as a customer but have never received any response in return.

At first I didn't want any compensation for the being so inconvenienced I just wanted my kitchen to be what I ordered and complete but now four months later I believe I should see some type of compensation.

In short my advise if your planning a remodel... Go to Lowe's!

I'm experiencing the exact same problem...

I just filed a complaint on this website and proceeded to read the threads of complaints concerning Home Depot. I stumbled upon your complaint and noticed the myriad of similarities. I paid for a Home Depot employee to come out and measure my kitchen, as well & the cabinets were ordered based upon the measurements that were taken. Unfortunately, the measurements were completely wrong and the cabinets do not fit my kitchen at all. One of the drawers conflicts with the oven door and it cannot be opened. All of the cabinets are too deep and run past the frame of the back door (the coutertop will therefore block part of the entrance). All of this and the Home Depot guys basically told me "too bad," that their measurements are not guarenteed unless they do the installation (which does not make any sense at all to me). I told them from the start that I was having someone else perform the installation, but only now is that a problem. They suckered me into ordering cabinets through them and now I'm out $4,000+. As a single 20-something female who just purchased her own home, this is a lot of money. I wish I would've read your post prior to making my purchase.

Some Good News but it took some work!

I talked with the manager Steve Harvey and he told me to take my glass doors to a glass company and that Home Depot would pay for the expense of having the glass changed to what we originally ordered and wanted. The issue with the granite and the dishwasher seems to have been resolved because Mr. Harvey said that the Company CTI would come out and install the brackets that can then be used to attach the dishwasher. I admit that Home Depot did come through but it took a lot of work and diligence on my end. Thank you Home Depot!

If this were my house, for 25k id be in a courtroom with them. This is very typical of companies that have their own installers. A-lot of what has happened since this appears to be a very well written complaint appears to have been set up by Home Depot from the get go. It would appear as if they intentionally made mistakes so that you would end up in the pickle your in, and hire their installers, or simply mess yourself up to the point where you would say d**n, I should of used the home depot installers, sure it would of cost more, but we'd of been better off. That's how this all appears to me.

I remember watching those flip this house shows, when they were sent the wrong equipment, they returned it, they didn't just install it. Keep up the good fight.

Best Regards

Gluing a piece of plywood to the granite sounds like a good solution. As a home do it yourselfer I would use JB Weld to attach the granite to the plywood. It is a very powerful 2 part adhesive. It comes in 2 tubes and you just mix equal parts together. You can get it at any hardware store, Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot if you ever decide to go back there :) If it does fail, which I doubt it will, nothing should be damaged as a result. I'm surprised your contractor did not come up with this solution and/or know of an adhesive to use.

Also, you could check with the granite supplier for an adhesive to use. They actually glue the granite to the subcounter or the top edges of the cabinets (wood to granite). But this may not handle the stresses the vibrations from your operating dishwasher puts on the bond. Also if only putting a small piece of plywood at each screw point may not give enough bond surface to the granite to stand up either.

I recently had granite put in - no subcounter. Looking at my dishwasher there is a board that runs above the screw points on the dishwasher between the 2 cabinets on each side of the dishwasher - the board is attached to the cabinets on each end. The dishwasher is attached to this board in 2 spots with screws. When the granite was layed, adhesive was put on top of the board. So the board is attached to the cabinet on each end and glued to the granite above. I'd suggest putting in a board the entire width adheared to the granite to get a much larger of surface to bond to the granite.

This shouldn't be a big issue for your contractor, or anyone handy at all.

Best of luck and hope you have a great Thanksgiving this year at least.

Some resolution but still not happy!

January 7, 2007 I talked with the Store Manager Steve Harvey. He has been very helpful in many ways. He told me to take the doors to Admiral Glass and unlike what his designer said, they would pay the cost to have the glass replaced. Just bring in the receipt. Still have the the issue of the dishwasher being installed.

Home Depot won't install the dishwasher but suggests that the contractor glue a half in. piece of plywood to the granite to anchor the dishwasher to. This is there solution to the problem when if we had known that the granite company was no longer installing sub-tops we may have been able to plan accordingly.

Although the cabinets, appliances, and floors are all from Home Depot and cost a total of $25,000.00 it's our problem because we didn't use Home Depot installers who (common knowledge) would have overcharged us to do the install anyway.

Home Depot won't even suggest a glue to stand behind for use because they are afraid they will be held liable.
