I tried, 28 hours before check in, to change a reservation from four nights to three nights.  Hotels.com basically said they cannot refund the last day.  This was not a discounted reservation.

I am going to find a homeless person to stay in the room that last night.  At least it will does some good.

First of all every reservation you get through Hotels.com or similar sites is a DISCOUNTED reservation.  But regardless of that you agreed to specific terms when you booked the hotel.  This included the cancellation and change policy(oh and even if no changes are allowed that is still a policy).

Oh, as for giving your last night to a homeless person.  While your heart is in the right place, your mind may not be.  Because YOU would still be the one responsible for any damage or theft from the room.  This could even be as simple as a huge cleaning fee if they are caught smoking in the room.  Just something to think about.
