Hotels.com Expedia Insurance was canceled so no refund. $260 rip off Internet

I paid for insurance for a non-refundable room in case I needed to change my reservation because we were needing it while closing on a house. Of course the closing was pushed back so I went to cancel my room, which was as easy as a click of the button and low and behold, they cancelled the insurance as well meaning I would not be getting a refund. I immediately contacted them and they said, what’s done is done. $260 rip off.

Of course they refunded the insurance premium because they had to, otherwise they'd have to refund me for the room. 
I'll never use hotels.com again.

Trip insurance covers only specifically enumerated reasons for canceling a trip, with a number of caveats and exclusions. Usually things like sudden illness, airline cancellations or delays, etc. Voluntarily canceling a trip because of a change of plans is not one of those reasons. Did you really think you can turn a non refundable reservation into a refundable one for $5 a night?

 I know. The only reason I used them is because my dad was on hospice and passed away a couple of months ago, so I had stayed quite a few times and had booked through this app and I saved up some points which was around $30 off the price. But I learned a valuable lesson. I deleted the app. Whomp whomp… terrible!

 This hotel was probably close by and you've probably seen them every day. If not, all the following STILL holds true. WHY ON EARTH DID YOU USE SOME TRASHY THIRD PARTY TO MAKE RESERVATIONS when you could have MADE THEM DIRECTLY YOURSELF??? Nothing has changed in the reservations business. YOU CALL DIRECTLY JUST LIKE ALWAYS. NONE of the trashy third parties, and that's ALL OF THEM, have any "special" arrangements to "get it cheaper". That is just a line of PURE BS to convince gullible, inexperienced travelers and this generation with little to no financial common sense, to swallow hook, line and sinker their CON GAME! They can't wait for you to cancel so that they KEEP your money which was refunded to them. That's how they make money. They will sometimes even make deliberate "mistakes" in hopes you will get mad and cancel and they KEEP YOUR MONEY! If you would have made your reservation DIRECTLY, like it always has been done, you would have your refund. From this point on, spread the word as to what this third party, useless, stinking trash has DONE TO YOU. Don't ever, ever, ever, ever use ANY of these third parties again. They are right. "What's done is done" as still another victim loses their refund thanks to this business model of fraud and deception, which is the basis of these third party reservation garbage dumps.
