You're not going to get swine flu and even if you get it, you're not going to die. Stop worrying, just go and enjoy the small crowds with a big margarita. Cancun in basically America anyways.

It's not really Hotwires fault. You will find the same booking policy with all the on-line services.
I don't think buying the insurance would help either. There must be an airline delay/cancelation or some kind of calamity to cancel, such as death in the immediate family. Just being afraid to catch flu would not qualify.
The airlines have become greedy and the rules are unreasonable. So what if you want to cancel within a month or more? It's not like they cannot sell the seat. By the way, I think if you check with hotwire, the flight can be re-booked within a year. You should not have lost $1500.

non refundable ticket and you were advised of this when you bought...that's not hotswire's rules...it's the airlines rules....
you will receive a credit to use later.
next time, please read all the conditions of what you are agreeing to.... OR buy trip insurance so you can get a refund.

Unfortunately, you've discovered the airline industry's fun little thing called the 'non-refundable ticket'
You bought a ticket on an airline to get to cancun, and it's not refundable. If you contact the airline it's with, you might be able to get them to give you credit allowing you to use it for another flight within 6 months or a year, instead. As for hotel, you'll have to negotiate directly with the hotel, as your ticket was booked through a consolidator (hotwire), and may not have the same rights that a normal reservation might have.
