I received a "Statement of Account for Individual Income Tax" yesterday from what looks like the Idaho State Commission (snail mail). The letter informed me that I owed $43.00 and gives me a statement#; date and file reference#. However it did not say what the amount owed was for, nor was there any tax, penalty or interest charges in the provided "boxes". Also I received a small refund back from State this year. Their wasn't any amount owed on my return! My question is, isn't there usually (or always) a taxpayer identification number on all correspondences from the State/Fed Income Tax? There was not one in this letter, and also I was never previously informed by the STC that I "owed" money. I checked out the phone numbers/address provided in the letter and they checked out, except the local number had a different last digit. The # I was to call was "an extension". I may be making something out
of nothing, because I can't call this number until after Memorial Day and yesterday was Saturday. I do know not to give anyone my social or TaxID over the phone. Anyone ever get anything like this, or what is your opinion? Like I say it could be legitimate. But in this day and age, I am skeptical of anything. Think this might be a new scam? Your thoughts would be most welcome, thank you!
