According to the Secretary of State's office, I can't renew my license plates because the renewal has been suspended by Ipass. I called Ipass & they informed me that I owe them $23,000 for toll violations. I asked how much were the tolls they claimed I missed were and was told $204.00. My Ipass account has money on it and not only am I being told "Oh Well", I am not allowed to dispute it in person because they state I am too late to do so, I explained to them that I need my vehicle to work & they offered a "work out" of over $3200.00. I offered to pay the missed tolls & despite having an Ipass account, they say no. Ipass "collectors" refuse to allow me to goto the arbitrator or follow their statement that if u have an ipass u just have to pay the tolls. They told me I can file an appeal, but I have to pay a fee and it goes to a department and it could take 60 days. I need my vehicle so I can work. I went back to Secretary of State & was told they can't do anything. They give people convicted of DUI's a special license to get to & from work but they have no ability for someone to renew their plates when there is a dispute over outrageous fees charged by a department of the government that has no oversight. It is wrong that the Secretary of State has no ability to allow for disputes to be addressed and that we, as citizens, are found guilty and sentenced without any ability to dispute suspensions & be able to work. This is my only vehicle & I can't afford to not drive to & from work.

I feel for you! I just left a comment detailing my story - to make a long story short (my story is long), my mom died suddenly a few months ago. For a couple weeks, the fact that her ipass account wasn't being replenished (I was linked to it by license plate) wasn't the first thing on my mind. I went in there with a death certificiate once I realized I had been using her Ipass and it probably wasn't getting money in it, the guy helped me, told me I was all squared away, I paid the late tolls and he removed the fines. I got my own Ipas that day. Then I get a $2000 notice, for $10 of missed tolls, this week. I was told it was because there is a 7 day lag-time between tolls and when they appear in the computer. So, the day I went in to Ipass HQ in downers grove ll to get a new Ipass in my own name, I used the tolls - and that was the day that is now costing me $2000. I asked about payment plans and was told "our plan si to make you pay now." Classy, Ipass. My mother dies in no small part due to this state's shitty underfunded hospitals, and then the state makes you pay whatever little money you might be left in fines and tolls.

How does $200 in missed tolls become $23000?  That is such a jump it seems unbelievable.  Do you have more details?  How did it get so high?
