Independence University Stevens-Henager College Never provided return label to send back Laptop - Had to pay $500 to release transcripts Murray Utah

  • Mid course at Independence University, I relocated from Arizona to Washington as a result of divorce. IU was informed of this and supported me in my program pursuit.
  • IU allowed me a break in my studies during this transition.
  • It was my intention to begin fairly immediately upon relocation.
  • Rather, I was exposed to the August/September 2015 cucumber salmonella.
  • This was not diagnosed for several weeks as it was not expected to be found in Washington.
  • Upon diagnosis, it was several more weeks before I recovered from this illness.
  • I kept IU posted on my health issues.
  • Once I was healthy, IU began looking for a hospital for me to begin working on my clinicals again.
  • IU claims the only hospital near my location was in Olympia.
  • Due to heavy traffic between my home and the proposed hospital, it would have taken me approximately 3 hours to travel TO the hospital and 2 hours to travel HOME from the hospital. Considering the time at the hospital to be 13 hours and the requirement that I do this five times in each month, this would have required 18 hour days, five times a month.
  • At the time, I had two minor, teenaged children.
  • It is not at all prudent to leave two minor, teenaged children alone like this.
  • IU never offered another choice.

  • Several months later I began receiving invoices from IU. I was confused as I had received a 100% scholarship for the program.
  • When I questioned IU about this, they said it was for the laptop they had provided. I was informed if I returned it, they would clear the account.
  • I asked for, but never received, return information.
  • They now claim that I only had a 90-day period from my "withdrawal" from the program to return the laptop.
  • I never really withdrew, nor was a really terminated by IU.

  • I now am preparing to enroll in another college.
  • In requesting transcripts, IU refused, due to the balance on the account.
  • IU agreed to a $500 payment compromise, which I paid.
  • My transcripts were released.

I remain sure that this was unfair. Upon receipt of the invoices, I offered several times to return the laptop. Again, I was never told how to return it. Further, I do not have a date of "withdrawal" or termination of my program. Therefore, this 90-day period to return it came and went without my knowledge.

I remain convinced that I acted in good faith throughout this. I requested reconsideration after I paid the $500. I was denied.

I remain convinced IU should refund my $500.
