Complaint Review: Independent Financial Trust

I received letter from INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL TRUST INC. about 4 days ago, the letter stated that I had won a large sum of money, and gave me instructions on how to go about receiving the money that I had supposedly won. I didn't feel that this was legitimate so I called around and asked a few question, and came across this web site.

I still have the check that was sent to me in the amount of $3500 as well as the letter stating that I won the money, I am glad that I didn't deposit this check or try to go and cash it anywhere. What other steps would I need to take to prevent this from happening to me again
