Complaint Review: Intelius

As the chairman of an organization invovled in community improvements, I was given a 'tip' that a gentleman volunteering to serve on our board of directors had a criminal conviction. I found that conviction on a free national website but no details of the crime itself. I logged on to Intelius based on their advertising of criminal background checks/details for a mere $19.95. I felt it was worth it to check out the details of this individual's crime.

When I paid, via credit card, to get the information, I found nothing more than the same information found on the national free website. For more 'detailed' information, I was directed to another thumbnail inviting me to spend $49.95 for details of conviction. Intelius' website indicated that the original fee of $19.95 would provide details of the crime and conviction. That was a blatant lie.

I contacted Intelius by phone and was told, "We don't give refunds and you should have known that we don't provide any information for a lousy $19.95 that isn't available for free on-line." I asked to speak to a supervisor and the 'CSR' laughed and said, "You ain't gettin' your money back so don't waste our time."
