I have a degree in video game design that I got doing online classes. I was roped into attending IADT rather than Devry or another school because IADT promised me over the phone that they would provide me with 1. Strong Portfolio Pieces 2. I would have created 3 video games by the time I graduated, for a handheld platform of my choice, a currently released console, and a PC game. 3. An internship. And 4. They would help me find a job. These promises are what led me to choose to pursue my video game design degree there, rather than someplace else. However, as my term there drew to an end, I kept checking my classes, wondering when I would get to build my video games as promised. I looked back at my portfolio and realized I had no work in my field to show for it. All the classes up to then penalized you for deviating from the assignments, which meant everyone more or less had the same work. Not very impressive to show your strength and talents if everyone is doing the same dull assignments. I called up finally in my second to last semester asking where my video game creation classes were, and was told that they were cancelled due to lack of funding and staffing, which was evident by the lack of variety in teachers. I had the same 3 professors teaching all my classes for my last two years there. I was NEVER informed those classes were dropped. I was never refunded my money for that tuition. I asked about the internship program and was told the same thing. Lack of funding/staffing gave it the axe. I asked about my career placement and job search program. Also killed. The only thing they offered me is a phone call every 4 months telling me to update my resume so they can post it on job boards, all of which I already applied for. In all, I still have no job in my field, no portfolio pieces to help me FIND a job and showcase my talent, and no playable games, which was the selling point for me. All I have is $32,600 in debt in MY loans, while my mom has $40,000 in loans she signed for which were deemed necessary to pay for my tuition and "supplies" for my classes, all of which were distributed digitally. I dont even have physical copies of the resources I suppoedly paid for, and can no longer access them because I have since graduated and can no longer access my classes. Furthermore, while in attendance, one of the professors was very rude, and downright insulting to me, calling me names in e-mails, mixing up my work with another student's and failing me for it, pre-emptively assuming I did an assignment wrong before I had submitted it when I asked a question, and told me I did an assignment incorrectly when i specifically explained my computer crashes when I try to execute a command in a program we were using and thus could not complete that assignment the way he wanted. Most of my education came from third party youtube videos, uploaded by non-professionals, because the methods the teachers used either did not work due to incomptible software (they had updated versions while mine were out of date) or they did not assist me when I had trouble following along. Instead they shamelessly promoted their own youtube channel, which was monetized, as the source of all the answers to the questions I had, never addressing my individual concerns. How do I get out of this crippling debt? My degree is worthless! I signed my life away to them and all I got was a fancy piece of paper! If they had only delivered on ANY of their promises, I would not be so furious.
