My son received a letter from a Peter Adams, claiming to be with a company called International Settlement Services. The letter stated that my son was the beneficiary of an unclaimed settlement in the amount of $80,000.
The letter came with a legitimate looking check for $2269.72. My son was excited, as he and his wife are struggling financially at the moment, but the letter said he had to call before cashing the check, and that he had to pay a "processing fee" before the funds could be released. It also advises him to keep this claim "completely confidential until it has been completely processed and your settlement has been delivered to you."
It sounded fishy to both of us, so we did some research on the internet and found that we were not the first to receive a letter like this, and that it is a scam to gain access to unsuspecting victims bank accounts.
