International Profit Associates Deceptive sales and contracts; heavy-handed techniques; Do not deliver as promised Buffalo Grove Illinois

If you are like me, you may have been sucked in by the pseudo-professionalism of this company. I am just way too trusting, because I am very honest myself.
A not so brief summary of the events which led to my predicament:

A couple of weeks ago, I received a call from some guy from IPA named Mike, I believe. He invited himself over to our home based business and gave me a presentation. He was very good. I think the term used for his technique is low-keyed high pressure. He offered an initial analysis of our small trucking company with five employees for $1200. I was fairly taken in and enthused about the possibilities of greater profits promised. When the real boss (my wife) arrived at home, she nixed the idea completely. She has been in the banking business for 35 years, and smelled a rat.
Mike called back to set up an appointment with the analyst. I brushed him off, saying I was too busy to discuss the matter. He made a few more calls to push me, and I told him we couldn't afford it.
Last Wednesday, April 9, he called again, offering me this analysis for "only" $500, because the analyst was in the area. I was driving at the time and told him to call me in the morning after 8:00am.
Thursday morning at 8:00 am, a man named Colin Moore arrived at my office door in complete business attire. I was still in my morning sweats and working at my computer after dispatching all the drivers. I didn't expect the analyst to show up.
BUT...since he was there - AND - he gave me many assurances that if I was NOT satisfied with the analysis, I would not have to pay. Colin was very good. He brought out a lot of important aspects to improve the ways I could run the business more effectively. In the end, I paid the $500 for his two days and many hours. I thought it was a bargain.
He had me sign and initial several documents which turned out to be contracts for additional services. One document, under the title of one of IPA subsidiaries, "ITA", included an "estimate" for $17,000.
I was bamboozled. When the Boss came home Friday night, she went ballistic - for good reason. Why did I not check out this company with the Better Business Bureau? Why wasn't she included in on the decision? My poor choice almost caused our marriage to implode.
Saturday morning, I tried to contact IPA. No response. No response on their FAX machine. I went on the Internet and looked them up. I found this website (www.ripoffreport.com) replete with similar complaints, and MANY of them in recent weeks. RED FLAGS!!! I went to the BBB website and found IPA to have an "Unsatifactory" rating. More Red Flags! I decided the rescind the" contract" at that point.
Interestingly enough, Colin Moore, the "analyst", did NOT leave a business card or any other contact information. I tried looking him up in the White pages with no success. So I kept trying the corporate offices. Still no success. I was not able to send the letter of termination until early Monday morning.
Early Monday morning, while my wife and I were doing devotions (largely, in my intent, to try to repair the damage done to our relationship by my decisions), we heard a knock at the door. We finished our prayers, and got up to find two men dressed in business suits, and one lady dressed similarly. Their names are: John Schaefer, Ron Waskiewicz, and Antoinette Marshall. I sent them packing, telling them I had terminated the agreement. I also mentioned that I had not even been given the courtesy of getting a contact number from the analyst, Colin Moore. Mr. Schaefer gave me his card as a result.
An hour or so later, I received a FAX from IPA. In that FAX were two invoices: one for $3508.11, the other for $7321.10. I became irate.
I have since that time been very upset. I have called a number of people I know for advice. My wife even has sent some of the documents to a corporate attorney. The prognosis does not look good at this time. We do NOT have the money to pay this. I hoping for some kind of resolution. But if I have to pay any portion of this fraud, I would rather pay an attorney the amount they claim due in my defense than giving it to this Scam organization.
This was lengthy, I know. Sorry about that. But if you spent the time to read about my experience, than I hope your eyes have been open to this.

This morning, I received an e-mail from the Chicago area Better Business Bureau. With some trepidation, I opened the link referencing my case. I was thrilled to read IPA's response. I have copied and pasted it below:

Mr. Schwartz cancelled the consulting engagement on Sunday April 13, 2008. IPA personnel were dispatched to this engagement on April 11, 2008 and we did not have an opportunity to cancel their transportation or notify them of the cancellation prior to their arrival at Mr. Schwartz place of business. Because Mr. Schwartz made a good faith effort to cancel the engagement prior to the arrival of our personnel there will not be any charge for our expense or personnel. I have taken the further precaution of removing Mr. Schwartz's company from our list of potential clients and blocked his telephone number from future access by our business development personnel.

Now, I will contact the state AG's office, the local sheriff, and the BBB to verify resolution.

Thank you, RipoffReport.com for giving me the forum the exercise my rights, and providing the many resources I used in this matter.

Thanks for your comments, Jim from Phoenix. We are fighting! Among the suggestions you made, we have contacted the BBB, and are in the process of filing a complaint with California's AG. I also filed a report with our county's Sheriff Department, as I want other citizens of our county to be aware of this scam.

I mentioned in my original report that my marriage almost imploded during the course of this episode. I'll explain below.

On Thursday evening, my wife returned from work about 6:15 pm. I had a choral rehearsal to attend that evening, and had to leave shortly after she came home. I left my wife with Mr. Moore to be filled in on many of the aspects of IPA's services.

By the time I returned from rehearsal, Mr. Moore had left, and my wife had gone to bed. But my wife had written me a note stating the the service was not affordable at the time. I did not see the note.

We sleep in a little more on Fridays because my wife works bankers hours, and Fridays she has to stay until past closing at 6:00pm. We arose at approximately 6:00 am, and had little time to talk as we usually do in the mornings, as Mr. Moore was virtually at our doorstep when we went downstairs. I endured more of Mr. Moore's presentation while my wife showered and got herself ready for the day. Again, little contact with her during this time. When my wife came back downstairs, I did as I usually do in the mornings, start her car and walk her out to it, sending her on her way with a kiss. She reminded me to read her note (sitting on the copier in the office). Mr. Moore was sitting in the office, and could easily hear her reminder to me.

When I returned to the office, I found one small piece of paper with some numbers on it, and a reminder to "do the survey". The note she wanted me to read (about not signing anything because it was too expensive) wasn't there. At this time, I didn't know that note existed.

During the course of Mr. Moore's presentations on Friday, he mentioned, tenderly, that my wife had broken out in tears over the the needs of our company. He told me that she was in full support of any decision I would make with IPA. And the little note with the figures was proof that she supported me - that the numbers were a bargain for the services we'd receive. By the way, the numbers were a calculation of different service adding up to over $50,000.

When she came home and found out I had signed the agreement, she went ballistic because she believed I had done this in spite of her strong opposition. She almost left me. Man, was she angry!

I assured her that we could back out of this, as California has a cooling off period.

Anyway, my wife and are are tenuously on our was back to repairing our relationship in the aftermath of IPA's deceptions. But what a cost!

I should also mention that this outfit seems to work in teams, headquartered in a local motel room. They make a sweep of areas removed from cities which have high powered attorney right next door: rural areas and suburban communities. The Invoices I received from them do not a FAX header with sender's information. And two different "agents" of this company have called me from the same cell phone number - a LOCAL cell phone number, by the way. Probably the cheapie one month specials.

Dave,

Sorry to hear about your experience. Several years ago I was an analyst(high pressure sales person) with this company. You are correct, they are thieves. Please contact your local BBB, your state attorney general, the local TV stations (the ones that do investigative reporting) and the FTC. If you fight back, IPA will cave in. They did nothing to earn the money. There is always a right of cancellation on any contract. Read some of the other reports on ROR about IPA and some of the other suggestions that have been made. You should come out okay.
