Complaint Review: JDP Construction Ltd Vacouver Canada

Responded to ad for admin assistant posted on Workopolis Sept 2.

David Dwayne, HR Manage of JDP Construction LTd email me Sept 19. His company is opening a office in Toronto. When could I do a phone interview? This switched to emailed interview questions which i answered. He confirmed he got them, asked for references. Next email, he's close to a decision, what's my availability?

Last email, Sept 26: I have to job but he needs me to start work before the office opens.

--He will send a cheque for office supplies, a laptop and a disc so I can work from home

--He wants me to book hotels for him in Toronto, buy office supplies and talk to the office property manager

--He will bring the employement contract when he arrives on Oct 26

Warning bells. I asked him to email me the employement contract and haven't heard from him since.

If laptop and cheque arrive, I'm giving them to the police. Cheque will be fake and laptop stolen or full of malware.

Warning signs I'll watch out for:

--Unnamed comapny in job advert

--Salary and other details changed in each document or were not included consistantly in all documents

--Porrly written website with no info about projects or management team

--Poor writing in job description and letters

--Googled JDP Construction Ltd and found company name in Nigeria, the Phillipeans, Florida and Vancouver

A real company will protect their name and brand. They will have well written documents and a decentwebsite to attract customers--so they have the money to expand to another city/country. My mistake was giving this guy the benefit of the doubt because many legit companies and individuals have crappy websites and are disorganized--hence their need for an admin assistant.
