In 2005 I applied for a Reward 66 Visa card and was denied.  Today in the mail, four years later, I receive a bill from a collection company stating I owe $393.05 or they're going to take legal actions.  I called the collection agency, First National Collection Bureau, Inc of Sparks Nv, and he verified my information after I told him my story.  He stated the debt was verifiable and started his speech to try to get the money.  I said oh hell no and asked for the companies phone number to try to sort this mess out.  He went on to say that I'll have to deal with them and they'll continue to collect and gave me the wrong phone number.  At least I believe it's the wrong number, It's a voice mail completely in Spanish, 720-229-8509.  I called them back and they called it themselves and then told me that, "It's a big company, you should be able to just google it."

WTF??

So I googled it and I checked out their website that has a few numbers, all automated and with no customer service options.  I googled again and it brought me here where I see at least 19 other people have vented about this company.  I called the number NYGIRL was nice enough to post but I haven't had any luck.  I've called four times throughout the day today and despite the fact it was during business hours, in both my time zone and theirs, it just simply said "Please call back during business hours."

My credit is already shot, medical bills from a car accident that resulted in brain surgery, so I'm not worried about whether or not they posted a negative entry, but this is just complete and total BS and I'm wondering what I can do to hopefully at least prevent others from being scamed as well.  Any suggestions??

Bud Says                         Consumer Comments Below

This is a bottom feeder debt buyer with alleged ties to the Hannah organization in Atlanta, GA   They purchase old debts for pennies, many out of statute, some that may have been discharged in bankruptcy, then mark them up at huge profits and attempt to collect at highly inflated prices.   Previously, they have offered consumers the opportunity to reaffirm old debts through various debt buyer credit cards such as Majestic Visa, Aspire and the scam mailer offering EMBRACE VISA CREDIT CARDS The disclosure information contained with the mailings is clearly aimed at deceiving and misleading consumers into thinking this is a good deal,  the truth is this is as BAD a deal as anyone could possibly get involved in.   I reviewed this with my legal advisor, based on that we urge anyone being contacted by:   JEFFERSON CAPITAL SYSTEMS, INC.
ASPIRE VISA   MAJESTIC VISA      EMBRACE VISA   DO NOT  EVEN CONSIDER THEIR SCAM OFFER!   IT STINKS, ITS EXTREMELY COSTLY, IT WILL OBLIGATE YOU TO AN AGREEMENT THAT YOU MAY NOT EVEN OWE.   THE FOLKS AT AND ASSOCIATED WITH JEFFERSON  CAPITAL ARE KNOWN SCAM ARTISTS WHO PREY ON  UNSOPHISTICATED CONSUMERS.  DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM OF THIS SCAM.
CAUTION : I recommend you NEVER disclose your bank account or credit card information to a debt collector, as you risk them emptying your account, or maxing out your credit card. If you feel they are reporting on your credit bureau files in error or need assistance in dealing with them, email  the details w/your location.  Assistance and referral to a consumer legal specialist may be available.           Email for Assistance

Never EVER talk to these scum bags on the phone - just send them a cease communications letter via certified mail with return receipt requested
Good luck and fight back

When a debt collector first contacts you, your first step should always be to request validation of the debt per your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Even if the debt is valid, request validation anyway.

Send them a letter via Certified Mail + Return Receipt (do not use regular mail) stating:

Per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, I am requesting written validation of this alleged debt, including a copy of the original signed application with my signature
--------------------------------------...
* Never sign your signature on any document that you mail to a debt collector. It could end up on a forged document that can be used against you. Simply type your full name.

When they call back, tell them: I have sent a certified letter to your office officially requesting written validation of this alleged debt per my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Per this federal law they must provide written validation within 30 days and they must cease collection activity until they send you written validation.
