We hired Denis Michaud to complete a deck on the back of our house and we both agreed to a price before he started the job.  We asked Denis if he needed to get a building permit for this job and we were told no because it was in the back of the house.  It took them 3 weeks to start the job and once the base was done it took another 2 weeks to finish the floor.

The last day of the job he called my fiances cell phone to tell us that he was going to change the ballast to lattice because he want over the budget.  My fiance explained to him that we did not agree to that and so Denis finished the deck how we had orignally wanted.  There were things that needed to be done that he did not finish such as a gate for my dog pen and the chainlink fence needed to be put back up, which I finished myself.

Denis then insisted that we owed him money because he hadnt quoted us the right price.  I was not paying for a job that was incomplete and on a price that we did not agree on.

We later found out that the deck was built on our septic system and it needs to be removed so the septic system can be maintnenced.  of course if the builder had gotten a building permit like he was supposed to he would have known that he couldnt build there.  I now have an estimate for the removal of the deck, the disposal of the materials, and the cost to build a new deck that is not in the septic system.

What should have been a 2000.00 job is now going to cost me 4000.00.  I think that he was unprofessional during this whole project.  As a business owner he should have know what the procedures were and should have done it the right way.  Also as a business owner he should have known that you do not agree to an estimate if you are not positive that it fits the budget.
