Bad oil change destroyed my 2002 sentra .....

I change my oil regularly in all of my vehichles. When it came time to change my oil in the 2002 nissan sentra, I took it to Jiffy Lube.

This was the third time I had the oil changed since I purchased the car. It was brand new with no problems. The oil change was quick. The employees were nice and even showed me the old oil and the new oil level and cleaned my carpets. I was on my way.

About two weeks later, I was driving home from work, when I noticed my engine my smoking and smelled like it was on fire. I was only a few seconds from my driveway. I pulled in and could not find an obvious problem when I lifted the hood.

The next day I scheduled an appointment with the Nissan dealership. They looked over the car and ask what the last repair or maintenance on the vehicle was. I told them I got my oil changed.

When they looked at the oil dipstick and then the oil filter they said that there was no oil in my car. The oil filter and the drainbolt had not been tightened.

At the time I worked in another city and was about a 30-45 minute commute. The distance and miles driven along with the loose equipment caused to oil to drain out (but I was unaware).

I assumed the problem was something else. When the technician came back a few minutes later he said that my engined had seized and I would need to leave it to be repaired. This was not covered under my extended warranty (supposedly) due to the fact another shop caused the damages.

I could not afford to pay for the repairs. I contacted Jiffy Lube and told them the problem. The person I spoke with was present when my oil was being changed. He said because I didn't bring the car back to them immediately, they were not held liable for the damages.

A worthless warranty, an oil shop who does not discipline its employees who are negligent and a worthless brand new car.

I had no choice but to trade the vehicle in, which gave me two months worth of headaches over the new loan. I refuse to do business with Jiffy Lube ever again.

A few years ago, I went to Jiffy Lube to get the oil changed on my Grand Prix and it seemed to take an abnormal long time, I went out and asked the floor manager what was going on, he said the nut that is welded to the oil pan (that holds the drain plug tight) broke off and they could not get the drain plug to hold a seal. I asked him if they would pay for the repair (since it was obvious that their flunky broke it off) and he stated that it wasn't their fault since whomever changed the oil last, over tightened the plug. I said no problem and went into my glove box and pulled out the last oil change document and showed the numb nut that his Jiffy Lube had conducted the last oil change and I asked him what he was going to do now. He said I would have to call their corporate headquarters and work out an arrangement. They put in a temporary rubber plug to hold the oil seal. I could not get anyone to answer the number he provided to the headquarters and since I was going out of town the next day I needed to get it fixed so, I went to my local dealer and they repaired the oil pan at a cost of $180. Jiffy Lube never returned my calls or tried to resolve the issue. I have and will not ever use them again......

heard it before... I'd rather pay a little more at the dealership

Teresa -

A few years ago a colleague had the same problem - except his engine seized up on him & he had to replace it. Same chain, too.

Not going to chains like Jiffy Lube is one of my policies - I'd rather pay a little more at the dealership (if you trust the dealership; mine's great, but some are so-so) or an independent shop. They have a tendency to want their customers to be happy.

By the way - the same applies to those brake shop chains. Several years ago my husband's wheel came off his car - not just the tire, the whole wheel - driving from Toronto a few weeks after a brake job at Meineke. Both the tow driver & the mechanic (we had it towed to an independent shop rather than another Meineke because it was 10:30 on a Sunday night & we weren't familiar with the area) agreed that the lug nuts hadn't been tightened properly & had pulled through. The first thing the tow driver asked was, "Have you had the wheels off for anything recently - a brake job, maybe?" Meineke's response when faced with our problem (and the part the mechanic replaced which clearly showed the problem): "You voided the warranty on the work when you took it to another shop."

My response to a warranty like that is: If you couldn't get it right in the first place, why the hell do you think I'd bring it back to you to fix?

Sorry to hear you had problems, too. Seriously, my advice is in the future, avoid those discount car care chains.
