Joe's Inn, 205 N. Shields Avenue, Richmond, VA. 23220

On October 14,2006 around 7:30 P.M, I took my daughter and my Grandson to Joe's Inn for dinner. I am a senior citizen and do not get out often. The last time I was at Joe's Inn was about 2 to 3 years ago or more, I am not sure of the date. At that time they served tasty large portions. The Spaghetti A La Greek Pasta included feta, provolone and romano cheese, it was chuck full of melted cheese and covered with lot's of sauce, the salads were full lot's and lots of feta cheese, along with tomatoes, hot peppers, olives, anchovies, and other goodies besides lettuce and a house dressing. The service was OK. I was looking forward to a tasty dinner, with my family.

It turned out to be a disaster. The service was awful. Our server Anna, was very rude. She answered our questions as she passed our table, failed to provide a place setting for my grandchild. I asked for salad first and when we finished to bring the spaghetti, the spaghetti arrived five minutes later. It got cold while it sat there. When we tried the spaghetti, it did not have enough sauce, the sauce was on top only, the whole dish was white spaghetti and there was only a tiny bit of melted cheese in this dish, it was a disaster.

I called the waitress over and she was extremely rude. I asked for the manager, Mari, she was more then rude. I asked if we could at least have some extra sauce, I was told it would cost extra money, I pointed out that the spaghetti was white, and was told sauce was on top, I said it was not enough to cover the spaghetti to really enjoy it. The manager could care less, she said too bad, that's it. To top it off the cheeseburger I ordered for my grandson came as a burnt hamburger with no cheese. It was like a rock.

I then asked for the owners, Michael and Marie Kafariteris. I was told they were not there, however the man that owned the restaurant was there, he apparently sold the restaurant to his children Mr & Mrs. Kafariteris. He was belligerent about the whole thing when he came by our table as I told him what was going on. He said you ordered the meal and you have to pay for it period.

The kicker was that besides the awful service and the horrible food. Food, food that I would not even serve to my dog, the menu states all pasta entrees are served with a garden salad or side dish, we never received that either. I was really looking forward to a wonderful meal with my family and it turned out to be a horrible scene. It was sad for us, especially when one is looking forward to having a good meal, arrives in good spirits, are paying customers expecting good service and good food, what we got was awful service and horrible food. We were very disappointed, sad and my blood pressure went up way too high.

Please do not patronize Joe's Inn, in Richmond VA. It's worst then a rip off, no one cares about you in this place, the food and service is the worst I have ever experienced in my life.

If what you wrote is true, you had a bad experience. The salads should have been brought out, the burger replaced and a small bowl of sauce should have been brought to your table immediately, no questions asked and no additional charges amde. Your request was highly reasonable.

To Peter, if consumers were turning away from cheese laden foods, then pizza and lasagna would not be half as popular as they are now.

First, it is unreasonable to expect a restaurant to be exactly the same as it once was 2-3 years ago. Why? Ownership changes, management changes, menu changes, personal preferences change, current health and other issues play a role ...

It sounds like you were looking for a very hearty meal that was in your words "chuck full of melted cheese and covered with lot's of sauce," etc etc etc ..

Did it ever occur to you that in this day and age of heart disease and concern about diet, that food "chuck full of cheese" no longer appeals to the majority of consumers? The restaurant must maintain a menu that is suitable to the majority so that they can stay afloat as a business.

As for the pasta having "sauce on top," that is the common way to serve pasta in a restaurant these days. You have to mix the sauce into the pasta to your liking. Pasta that is drenched in sauce (like spaghetti-o's) neither looks appealing nor tastes good to the majority of people.

The rest of your post is nonsense. If you want extra items, of course you will have to pay for them. Sauce frequently has an extra charge as stated on the menu. Some people like more sauce on their food, which is fine, but they need to pay for the extra food which they are consuming! And as for the other food items, once you realized that the restaurant just wasn't the same as it used to be, why did you not ask about the ingredients/portion size before ordering additional numerous entrees? It sounds to me like you were hoping to get the manager to comp your entire meal so you could get a freebie.
