John Beal Roofing John Beal Roofing ignores catastrophic failure of roof. Water leaking all along 50 foot of roofing St Louis, Missouri
This report is about how an existing John Beal Roofing customer that had roofing problems ignored by several John Beal Roofing staff members and a manager, was again ignored by John Beal Roofing when the customer called with further problems to the existing problems.
The initial problem included a roof leak issue and buckling roof bards and is on another Ripoff Report.
This additional problem is a catastrophic failure of the roof with water leaking right through and all along 50 foot of roofing after some snow in December 2009. The roof is only 2 years old.
On March 8th, 2010 (Monday) John Beal Roofing was told that I was an existing customer and my roof was leaking badly.
John Beal Roofing said "A specialist will call you".
On Saturday March 13th, 2010 I discovered a string of ridge shingles destroyed. I feel it could only have happened on Friday, or Saturday morning. These were strong shingles in a sheltered location compared to others, that had withstood many violent storms through the years. The weather was fine. There were no animal scratches on any affected material.
Up until March 18th, 2010 John Beal Roofing's specialist has not responded.
An existing John Beal Roofing customer telling them that the roof is leaking and rain is in the forecast. Their Yellow pages Advertisement brags about the John Beal Roofing 24 hour response, but I was ignored by John Beal Roofing, again.
If an existing John Beal Roofing customer with water pouring through the roof can't get a 24 hour response, who will? and this isn't a hail damage emergency time most companies are looking for work in these financial crisis times.
I've had to turn off the power because there is so much water pouring in, I'm worried about the electrical system.
Note. My shingles and underlay material are totally 100% warranty covered by GAF for material and Labor for at least 5 years, so all John Beal Roofing needs to do is show them the defective product that's causing the leak.
When you've already had calls about major defects in the roofing ignored by John Beal Roofing, when their manager Dan failed to follow through on his agreements and chose to avoid/ignore, imagine what it feels like when 2 large sections of roof have a catastrophic failure, water leaking through along an entire 50 foot width of roofing.
The OSB boards under the shingles are soaked right through and are a dark wet color and the layers of its construction are separating, so it's finished. Water pouring down on everything under it.
This alone is mind blowing and depressing on a 2 year old roof, but to have John Beal Roofing as the company that backs up the install only makes for a very worrisome time.
When the roof was installed we went all out to go with the best products, no expense spared. 40 year GAF Prestique Grande shingles (was ELK) and GAF deck Armor underlayment which claimed to be so much better than the older tar paper underlayment. It also claimed to be that much better than the newer synthetic ones too, so much so it cost 4 times as much as them. It is hard to believe that all this failed, where my original tar paper with holes 1/2" big with a wood roof provided relatively little problem.
John Beal Roofing lists the following. The information he promotes does not fit with the experience I'm having with the John Beal company. I will re-contact John Beal Roofing, present the Ripoff Report and hope to have peace of mind. With this roof I am extremely scared every time it rains that the rest of the roof could fail at any time. I will never have peace of mind with this roof.

John Beal - You're Fired!
#10Author of original report
Sat, April 17, 2010
Day 2
The weather arrived. Mr. John Beal hadn't covered anything. The roof problems leaked, again.
My location is anonymous and I am directing this issue towards the John Beal HQ in St Louis as I couldn't receive satisfaction at my local office.
Mr. John Beal and his John Beal Roofing company were so far from my expectations in the phone calls on Day 1 (after Ripoff Report published), that I had to write that Mr. John Beal's call was 'turbulent'.
The reality is I found it disturbing. I was totally amazed at what Mr. John Beal said in the calls. How he stumbled angrily through the details of the problem.
In relation to publishing the 2 ripoff reports Mr. John Beal told me in an angry tone, THERE WOULD BE 'CONSEQUENCES FOR OUR ACTIONS'.
When John Beal Roofing had done so much wrong in my eyes, the first thing I would expect to hear from Mr. John Beal would have been kind apologies for John Beal Roofing's lack of actions and broken agreements, but he was angry and he immediately went into defense and talked about what it meant to him. Not about how I felt about an emergency 50' of leaking roof, with an additional type of roof leak and problems.
Major points.
In 2009 the merged company who installed the roof (John Beal did not) could still be contacted and they told me the company had merged with John Beal Roofing and John Beal Roofing would complete the repair and John Beal took on the warranties too.
The John Beal roofing receptionist indicated the companies had merged and they would handle the warranty issues of the merged company.
Daniel, a roofer, saw and agreed with the problems and took them to the manager for repair approval.
Dainel in a later phone call spoke about himself going through the box of warranties John Beal Roofing had taken on from the merged company.
Dan (not Daniel), the manager, at my home, spent a lot of time, between 5 and 10 minutes, telling me about how John Beal merged with the company that installed my roof.
Dan saw the problems at that time, approved and agreed to fix my roof.
Dan said they had had a lot of trouble repairing roofs from the merged company.
Dan said they were talking about tearing up the John Beal / Merged company agreement.
Dan said, but don't worry, we'll fix your roof.
BUT
Mr. John Beal himself, in the recent phone conversations, as he was trying to get out of fixing the problems, denied a merger had taken place.
Many people said a merger had taken place, but only Mr. John Beal himself denied it when confronted with major roofing problems.
Who do I believe?
Did John Beal tear up an agreement?
Dan the manager approved and agreed to fixing my roof problems.
Mr. John Beal himself recently said no to any repair at no cost.
Mr. John Beal and John Beal roofing have gone against an agreement.
I can therefore not trust a John Beal agreement.
The John Beal office said they would get back to me on numerous occasions, but they didn't. Many John Beal Roofing agreements broken.
Daniel, the John Beal roofer, said he'd get back to me, but he never did. A John Beal Roofing agreement broken.
Dan, the John Beal Manager, said he'd get back to me, but he never did. A John Beal Roofing agreement broken.
The John Beal office said they would have a specialist contact me, but no specialist did. A John Beal Roofing agreement broken.
Mr. John Beal himself assured me, when I was desperate to have my roof leaks covered, that he would return a call to me at 4pm. ASSURED ME. Mr. John Beal himself decided that I was not worthy of a call at 4pm. A John Beal Roofing agreement broken.
Mr. John Beal himself, on his web site in multimedia video tells - No technician, not wearing Technicians Seal of Safety Badge would work on the premises, indicating they were fully professionally trained criminal background check and drug tested. - I saw no visible Technicians Seal of Safety Badges on the workers he sent onto the roof of my home just before 4pm.
The inspectors Mr. John Beal sent didn't even spend the time to locate all the problems. Didn't even find a single low nail roof leak problem, and where they did inspect, they damaged bending shingles too far, snapping them in two, and acrobatics with a short ladder to get to and from a high location that should have been reached by a full sized ladder, resulting in shingle damage.
This was a third inspection by John Beal Roofing. In the last call to Mr. John Beal he didn't even mention the details of the inspection. I eventually, late in the call, asked about what he had discovered from the inspection, as the inspectors agreed with me at my home, but Mr. John Beal wouldn't talk about it.
Because of the bad experience I had with John Beal roofing and Mr. John Beal himself, I decided to contact the BBB for information regarding his HQ/companies. Note I have not complained to the BBB regarding this company. The general standard for good companies is to ensure disputes are resolved and no complaint leave the company. If a complaint makes it onto the BBB, the customer has a serious concern they feel strong enough to spend their own extra time and effort on. The BBB has a status Administratively Closed. They define it as - the complaint could not be satisfactorily settled using standard methods of voluntary dispute resolution.
Location. 7659 NW Prairie View Rd Kansas City, MO 64151-1544
I contacted the Kansas City BBB regarding this location's 1 administratively closed complaint at this Fall 2008 recently started location, but they provided no additional details in the reply.
Location: 3055 N. Lindbergh, Saint Ann, MO 63074
I read at the BBB that the company had additional company personnel: Sheldon Korlin - General Counsel So I contacted the BBB to ask why they list this. Here is the reply:
From: stlouisbbb.org
date: Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 10:23 AM
subject: RE: Questions about John Beal cpmpany
The attorney, Mr. Korlin, works for the firm and is their designated person to handle consumer issues. While this may not be common among companies of this type, it is simply a desire of the company to let him handle issues and indicates nothing good nor bad about the firm. Some cases may have gone to mediation, this is a common practice that we use to help resolve disputes when a simple letter or e-mail is not sufficient. We do not report on which cases go to mediation, just how they are resolved. Mediation is an informal process that takes place over the phone between a BBB mediator and the consumer and the BBB mediator and a representative of the firm.
2 regarding Issue Not Defined
2 regarding Billing or Collection Issues
1 - Failure to correct billing errors
1 - Unauthorized credit card charges
4 regarding Contract Issues
3 - Failure to honor a contract or agreement
1 - None of the Above - Contract Complaint Issue
1 regarding Customer Service Issues
1 - Failure to respond to phone calls or written requests for assistance or support
5 regarding Repair Issues
4 - Improper or inferior repair
1 - None of the Above - Repair Complaint Issue
7 regarding Service Issues
The above describes the nature of the complaints. We do not break down which ones apply to the administratively closed complaints and which apply to the resolved issues.
BBB | Trade Practice Investigator
End of e-mail reply from St. Louis BBB.
I read there were currently 6 administratively closed cases for this location.
There is at least one more location, but I didn't notice complaints for it.
The magnitude of the problem to me regarding John Beal Roofing.
$16,785-00 worth of roofing. Areas of plywood buckling, bad nailing making some new shingles nothing more than holes, leaking. And I should be pressing John Beal Roofing roofing to repair it, some of which John Beal roofing had agreed to fix but I'm firing John Beal Roofing instead.
After hearing your phone calls Mr. John Beal and there being no change after you'd had time to reflect on the phone calls, I would not trust John Beal roofing to do work on my roof. Consequently, Mr. John Beal and John Beal Roofing incorporated, I no longer want you to fix the roof. YOU'RE FIRED!
