I am a former employee of Hagan's Tavern. I am filing this report to ask people not to support Hagan's Tavern by giving them your business. There are many good reasons for this request

As an employee at Hagan's Tavern I suffered through constant sexual harrasment and verbal abuse. Although I myself was never physically acausted, I am witness to the abuse of several other employees on many occasions.

After almost two years of providing nothing but excellent service for this establishment and receiving numorous complimets,(some of which were given directly to my boss whom never acknowledged them)my working hours were abrubtly takin away from me, with no notice or explanation. The owners wife had decided, for what ever reason, that she did not like me. Since there was no leagal way that I could be fired, taking away my hours forced me to make the decision to stay at a job where I could not earn any money, or leave for something else. I left and Dee Reihnhard got her wish. Many other former employees have stories just as bad if not worse.

Your situation is not uncommon

Actually, the reason they cut your hours back rather than fire you is because this way they can avoid having to pay any unemployment costs for you. Restaurant employees have virtually no protection from unjust termination, and no recourse when it happens, unless you have a contract, which over 99% of restaurant employees do not.

Here's what they did with you: they probably would have liked to just fire you, but didn't want to have to keep paying out money for you. As long as you are still on the payroll they can schedule you very little and you won't be able to claim any benefits. The idea is that you will end up quitting because you're not making any money, which eliminates their liability per your unemployment. I've got a post under a report about "Skyline Chili" that explains the rules in more depth and discusses what people can do to change this situation. Best of luck to you!

P.S. If anyone out there has any advice as to recourses for unjustly terminated at-will employees, or employees like those in Sarah's situation, please let us know.

The e-mail address I provided before is incorrect. The correct e-mail address is frederickcounty.com/dining/haganstavern.htm

You can also type hagan's tavern into your search engine and the link should pop up.

Thank you for your support by not giving your business to John Hagan's Tavern
