Complaint Review: John Robert Powers

John Robert Powers Childrens' dreams of stardom crushed....Bad Parental Decision Charlotte North Carolina

My 10 year-old daughter loves to sing, act, and dance. She saw an advertisement, while watching TV. She got my younger son of 8 excited also.

She gave the number to her father, who called and set us up an appointment. We debated whether or not to go with gas prices being so high and we would have to drive for an hour. We also only get paid once a month and were struggling to make it to the end of the month.

Since the kids were so excited and we could not afford to go on vacation this year, we decided to make a day of it and take them to a nice restaurant afterwards. We even encouraged some good friends of ours to set up an appointment at the same time and follow us down to Charlotte.

They said to dress up, so we even had to buy my son some dress pants and nice shoes. We were there for 3 hours. Afterwards, my family and our friends who went with us started questioning the legitimacy of this company. Thank God for the Internet....we checked and read about all the scams. We thought we were going for auditions and had no idea of the thousands of dollars these people were wanting. We were so naive! They seemed so nice! It makes me lose some of my faith in human nature.

We were lucky, I guess. We found out that same day, and did not waste any more money or time calling back. All in all, I guess this lesson costs us $60 plus some special pictures that we will probably never get back. We are all disappointed but more the wiser!

It boggles my mind sometimes how people go to the extremes with their understanding. Smearing a school by saying your child's dreams were crushed because you couldn't afford the tuition is ludicrous. Growing up, my family couldn't afford to go to Disneyworld, but Im not going to hop online and call the place a scam because of it. ( I still have yet to go there)

***This was a decision you made. No one is responsible for your decisions except YOU. I don't blame the store when I go grocery shopping if I didn't enjoy the cereal I bought. If you knew it was going to be a major struggle for you to go, you should've gone at a time when it would be easier on the family. JRP is not responsible for the gas prices....that would be Bush's fault***

*** Your complaint here holds no substance. You went to an audition with a casting director, and a school. If the casting director was interested in your child, then the CD would call you when they get back to L.A. If the school was interested in you, then you are asked to call the next day to find out. This was all explained to you when you got there. How is that a scam????? Everything was explained to you from the very beginning, so what seems to be the problem? If your child wishes to be in this business, she needs training, period. So do you, because any agent, CD, or manager is going to be working with you just as much. So many people think because their kid is cute and funny they can make it big and get rich. Do you know how many children, who I'm sure at home are super fun and animated, get in front of that camera and close up, speak quieter than a churchmouse, and lose all sense of play? Do you think an agent or CD wants that? Thats where JRP comes in. They train the kids to grow out of their shells, learn about the business, and get exposure to the people they need to meet. So many kids don't want to work, they just want to meet Hannah Montana. Miley Cyrus cannot help you get into the business....maybe her AGENT can, but not her. Film actors get paid a lot of money, even day-players get close to $800 a day. No one is going to hire a kid who is nervous, shy and closed up. They aren't going to baby them, they are going to find another kid that IS prepared and ready to work. I know you're daughter wants to sing, and act, so I can only tell you to get her into classes...anywhere. If JRP isn't for you, thats fine, but if you want her to follow her dream, then start helping her and supporting her. Get her acting books, take her to go see plays, get her involved in church choir. Take care
