I bought a male great dane in april of 2003 from joyce d godfrey, owner of toyland danes. I asked her about her dogs health and gene history and she stated that all of her dogs had been dna tested and all carried great genes. i bought a female out of a different litter from her as well. The female was seven weeks old and the male was only a week and a half old when we picked him out so we could not take him home yet.

We paid a deposit of $400.00 which was half of the cost of the dog. we paid $650.00 for the female and took her home that day. we informed the lady that we intended to breed them in the future. She stated that she thought the two dogs would produce quality offspring if and when they were bred. she assured us that they would receive akc registration papers. we picked the dog up four and a half weeks later.

Towards the end of the year I started to get concerned because only one of the dog's testicles had dropped. I called the vet and they said that given the dogs age that both of them should already be down but I needed to bring him in and have him checked for cryptorchidism. I did so and they confirmed that he was in fact cryptorchid and that it was in fact a genetic condition and it would turn into cancer if the dog was not neutered within 2-3 years due to the fact that the undescended t******e would remain at an abnormal temperature inside the abdominal cavity. The vet also stated that he should not be used for breeding at all because he would definately pass this potentially cancerous gene on to his offspring. The cost of neutering a crypyorchid dog is $250.00-$350.00 because of the amount of incisions that have to be made in order to remove the undescended t******e. This is twice the amount of neutering a normal dog.

I called her and told her about the situation and told her that i would need part of my money back on the dog and the cost of having him neutered. She said she would not do either because her dogs had been dna tested and she knew that her dogs did not contribute to this condition. I told her about what the vet said about it being caused from genes passed down from the parents and she said that genetics had nothing to do with it and they did not mean a thing. she also told me that she was about to start breeding white danes. If anyone has done any research whatsoever on white danes they would know that statistics have proven that out of a litter of seven white dane pups 5-6 will be born completely deaf and somewhat visually impaired and at least one will be stillborn. I told her about this and she laughed at me and said that is not true. I told her about the many sites that I had been to on the internet researching cryptorchidism and white danes and that it was true. She denied it again and so I told her that I would handle it and hung up the phone.

Since I talked to her I have reported her to the better business bureau, texas division of consumer protection and the akc and now here.

I am stuck with a dog that is absolutely useless for breeding. He is a great pet and I could not part with him even if I wanted to. So now I will have to buy another male dane to use for breeding with my female. So I will have three danes to feed instead of two. Mind you my two danes at about a year old now go through 110 pounds of dog food every two weeks and they're still growing. Can you imagine what three will eat? Thanks to this unethical breeder I will soon find out.

STOP! ..before you think about using the Better Business Bureau (BBB)... CLICK HERE to see how other consumers were victimized by the BBB's false or misleading information. Don't be fooled! It has been reported, when there are thousands of complaints and other investigations underway by authorities, the BBB has no choice but to finally give an UNsatisfactory rating to a BBB member business that is paying the BBB big membership fees every year. When a business is reported that is NOT a BBB member, BBB files WILL more likely show an UNsatisfactory rating, then reportedly shake down that company to become a member of the BBB. One positive thing about the BBB is, either way, if a business has an unsatisfactory rating with the BBB, you can be sure, the business is bad. But what about all those BBB member businesses that had complaints filed against them? Consumers never get to hear about them. What about the BBB advertising to the public? Is this a false and misleading perception they are giving about consumer confidence when dealing with a business? Click here to understand more of what consumers and business alike are saying about the BBB. You decide. ..Remember. The BBB membership is not earned, it's paid for!
