On 06/24/03, my wife and I contracted with Jubilee Home Solutions to do a bathroom remodel on our first floor bathroom. The job was a disaster from the start. The job started approximately a week late, only one worker was sent to do most of the work and my lawn was used for a parking lot by this worker.

The weather was hot and I am disabled and cannot tolerate heat but the worker had the door open most of the time running up my electric bill. The West wall in my bathroom was modified for water service and a drain for a washer and dryer. The carpenter drilled holes for the water service and drain in the 2X4" on the floor of the wall. When the plumbers came these holes were not used but 3-4 studs in the wall were cut to accomidate the 2" drain so a piece of the studs were removed(approx.4" from each. The remaining stud was not tied into anything but left free standing. The studs were also drilled for two 1/2" copper water lines further weakening the studs. Then approximately 100# of cement was poured where the tub was set and approximately thirty-five 12"X12" tile added to the floor with the weight of the grout and the cement used to set the tile.

The painting was of poor quality as stated by the companies own worker who redid the paint a few month's later. Approximately 1 year later it was noticed that the upstairs bathroom West wall was dropping 3/8" and the door would not shut and there were numerous cracks in the wall. The outside of the wall of the first floor bathroom showed cracks and pieces of drywall compound falling off in the area of the cut studs. Jubilee Home Solutions was notified and they informed us that they would come look at the problem for $65.00/hr. They immeadiately "hid" behind their one year warranty saying that it had expired.

I later found out that no permit was ever applied for or recieved. Jubilee Home Solutions advertises on local television stations remarking about their quality workmanship and that they are members of the BBB and that they are members of the AHRA. The Missouri Attorney's General office says that they don't handle this type of complaint. I have yet to recieve a reply from the AHRA as I have sent them an e-mail explaining this fiasco. The Greater Kansas City Better Business Bureau closed the case without seeing all of the evidence. I mailed them digital photographs of some of the poor workmanship, and they closed the case before recieving them.

Earlier this year the Ethics & By-laws committee instructed Jubilee Home Solutions to make the necessary repairs in a "timely Manner" but this fell on deaf ears at Jubilee. Jubilee Home Solutions membership with NARI has been terminated by NARI.

Later I recieved a visit from Andy Andreas and Brice Bertram, unannounced and not invited, on the very day that I was released from the hospital after open Heart Surgery. When my wife answered the door they just gave the name Andy. My wife thought it was some of my fellow workers visiting.

When Mr. Andreas introduced his self to me I told him that I had just been released from the hospital after major surgery and was in no shape to show him around. He insisted and asked my wife to show him around. I told her just to show him the bathroon and nothing else. Mr. Andreas continued to ask for more and more until I told him that was enough and to go. As he was leaving he asked what I wanted and I told him just a refund as they had not lived up to the contract and he seemed acceptable to that. As soon as they left I was forced to go back on oxygen. The next day I was readmitted to the hospital for 5 additional days for congestive Heart failure.

Later after my discharge again I recieved a call from Mr. Andreas offering me a refund but over a period of nine months, or for them to hire a company of their choice to make the repairs or their crew to make the repairs. I told him that they are not liscensed to perform work in our city to which he replied "just an oversight". I told Mr. Andreas that they recieved my money upfront at the completion of their work and I feel that I can't accept their offer. Mr. Andreas then started telling me of his financial position stating that his company could not afford $9000.00 pay out at one time.

I am presently talking with an attorney about making this a civil matter and asking for punititive damages and lawyer fees. This incident just shows the little care for one's health this company shows.

Still No Repair

#11Author of original report

Fri, February 03, 2006

A second Structural Engineer was hired by Mr. Brice Bertram (Jubilee Home Solutions) who totally agreed with first engineer on the cause and necessary repairs need to fix the damage caused by the poor workmanship of Jubilee Home Solutions. This information was sent to NARI, National Association of The Remodeling Industry an organization of which Jubilee Home Solutions/Andreas Remodeling is a member. In their letter to Jubilee Home Solutions they say:On December 15, 2005, the kansas City NARI Ethics & By-laws committee met to discuss this complaint. Every member of the committee reviewed the structural Engineering reports from both engineers. According to your letter re:Structural Engineering finding, Jubilee is not willing to fix issues with the upstairs bathroom. However, both structural engineers reports state that those issues do need to be resolved. At the December 15 Ethics & By-laws Committee meeting, the committee members voted unanimously to send you this letter requesting that you perform the activities as outlined in your letter PLUS repair the second story issues that exist. It would be in your best interest to complete this work in a timely fashion so that both parties may put some closure to this entire incident. As of this moment nothing has been done or has there been any contact from Jubilee Home Solutions on this matter and is scheduled to Binding Arbitration on 2/8/06. Call for Action has been told that Jubilee Home Solutions will be assessed a $100.00 fine by NARI at it's February meeting.

In past mediations through the Greater Kansas City BBB and Lynne Horne, Jubilee Home Solutions. It was requested by Ms Horne that I hire a structural Engineer to evaluate the structural damage to my home and if the damage was due to the work performed by Jubilee Home Solutions/Andreas Remodeling that they would accept the findings and pay for the cost of the engineer.

Now that the Certified Structural Engineer has examined the work performed by Jubilee Home Solutions and found that the cause of the damage was due to the work performed by their workers, Mr. Brice Bertram, now acting for Jubilee Home Solutions has decided that he wants to hire another engineer to examine what the first "Certified Structural Engineer" examined, a complete change from the previous mediations as Ms Horne stated "We will accept the findings of a Certified Structural Engineer" in her response to the BBB.

I requested that this company come and examine their work in the first complaint and they refused stating that they would but at a cost to me of $66.00/hr and now the have reneged on their word and now want to send someone of their own. In my previous complaint I talked about an organization "AHRI" this was wrong, the organization is "NARI" so please make the change.

Structural Engineer said shoddy work performed by Jubilee Home Solutions/Andreas Remodeling

In May a "Structural Engineer" was hired to look into the shoddy work performed by Jubilee Home Solutions/Andreas Remodeling. The Engineer reported that the problems encountered are caused by the work performed by Jubilee Home Solutions/ Andreas Remodeling. The Engineer states that the wall was compromised by the cutting away of the studs to run a horizontal drain and as the wall is a "semi-loadbearing" wall that the effects may take time to "show up".
