K & B Transportation, Inc. - Western Livestock Express, Inc. Western Livestock Nobody with any intelligence should work for K & B Transportation ever. S. Sioux City, Nebraska
K & B Transportation, Inc, whose primary customer and affliate is Tyson/IBP, is in my opinion, the worst of the worst trucking companies to work for. I've been driving over the road for 4 and a half years, and fell into their "guarantee" trap that they put out to entice qualified drivers to move to them with "2500" miles a week guaranteed, run them or not. In this economy, and with the reduction in freight and miles in the industry, this sounded too good to be true. After my experience with them, I wish I had checked their reports out here first.
After hiring on with them after a rigorous orientation schedule, I worked for them for about 3 weeks before being "let go" for not playing ball. Playing ball in this term means I wouldn't falsify my driver logs to meet their absurd delivery requirements for Tyson or any other client of theirs that demanded impossibilities from a solo driver.
On one of many situations, I was asked (strongly urged) to falsify my driver log so that their load could deliver on time. This particular load was a load of fresh apples, in a reefer unit set on continuous run cycle that had been relayed to me by another driver in the middle of my mandatory 10 hour break (common for this.) The reefer was left with me with less than a quarter tank of fuel, at a location that didn't take Comdata for fuel. I was argued with by K & B, to get up in the middle of my ten hour break (the law) and go and fill the reefer down the city about 2 miles away. I told them no, I was on my 10 hour break. At that point, they told me to redo my log and show that I started the day later than I had. I told them no, it was illegal and I wasn't allowed to drive until my 10 hour break was done. They got mad and sent another driver to take the reefer down the street to fuel, then bring it back. this is when they decided to route me up the office and tell me I was done with K & B because of this and late loads. The late loads were due to my following DOT law and only driving what I legally could.
They run you ragged and use sleep deprivation on a constant basis, which is un-safe and puts the driver and the general motoring public at great risk. In fact, last week one K & B driver missed their exit on U.S. 287 in Colorado and did an illegal u-turn, which resulted in another big rig hitting the driver door of the truck, sending both drivers to the hospital. I have a strong feeling that the K & B driver was driving fatigued and was the victim of the company's absurd driving requirements.
First of all, to drive for K & B, you have to agree to drive primarily at night. Second, they run you ragged and tell you when your ten hour break starts and ends. It doesn't matter to them that it took 4 or 5 hours at the receiver to unload when you stopped the truck...to them, it's the start of your ten hour break! Oh, and they usually require the driver to be present for unloading. Gee, how can you be sleeping during that time? No matter, when the break is over, regardless of your sleep, you're off and running another 650-700 miles, mostly at night. These are un-safe practices and dangrous for the driver and the motoring public.
Even with drop and hook freight, same rules apply. When you get there, you're there! Start of 10 hour break most times. Never mind it takes waiting your turn in line at the security stations, it takes time to drop your trailer, slide your tandems (req. on all loads for Tyson) and find and hook to yiour next load. Now, check out with security, do your qualcomm messages and depart. If you need to break, you only have the remaining time from the time you got there, otherwise, its on the road to the next location. Again, very dangerous.
As to the drivers being left stranded when they are sent home from K & B, who usually took them there from wherever in the country. When I went home, they got me a bus ticket, however, there was a driver there who they let go after orientation, who passed all his test, including drug screen. They sent him home because he he didn't agree with company policy of us paying for scales and tolls up front, out of our pocket, then submitting them for re-imbusement in a trip pack envelope. This caused you to be re-imbused about a week later. Absurd! The company should just open the Comdata cards for scales, and tolls should be advanced, but not taken out of a driver's pay, unless the receipt isn't turned in within a week or so. The drivers shouldn't pay for that at all.
Also, K & B will charge you for damaged equipment on the truck, it's their policy. If a side mirror shakes off, you pay for it, whether in full, or through a payment plan. Again, absurd! well, that driver was taken to the bus station along with us, but when he got to the ticket window there wasn't a ticket for him. He called K & B and they told him he was on his own. He told them he had no money and they told him to go to a homeless shelter, he wasn't their problem! Note...for any driver who gets stranded by K & B in Sioux City Iowa bus station. Across the street, on the corner is the office of Congressman Steve King. Although he's not usually there (in D.C) the District Representative, Sandy Hanlon is usually there. We spoke with her and filled out Affidavits regarding K & B. She calle them and eventually they issued a bus ticket to that driver.
I've formally requested Congressional intervention regarding K & B Transportation and the way they treat their drivers and subject the constituents of every Congress person with dangerous policies that affect the motoring public. I believe, in the name of public safety, that Congressional intervention is needed, along with a a FULL audit by the U.S. Department of Transportation of the copmany and its policies. logs should be checked against any and all means including scales, fuel stops, ports of entry, sensors, receipts, electronic monitoring via Qualcomm as to vehicle location and if moving or still. Something needs to be done to this company as every man, woman and child is at risk in all 48 states where there is a K & B Transportation truck and driver on the road. I hope people are listening before its too late.

The complainer looks like a selfish whiner or a self-righteous, ignorant rookie. Based on my experience, I would also call her a liar.
DOT rules about HOS are meant to be bent. Everyone involved in the industry (including the DOT) knows this. If a person isn't willing to go out of their way once in a while to help the company, they don't deserve the job.
No one has to drive 700 miles in a shift; in fact, at the 62mph these trucks are governed, that is not possible - so there is one lie we can be sure of.
I have a great job with K&B. I get $1,145/ week salary and I only have to work about 50 hrs/week for it. I get 3 days off after 12 days out and my off days never affect my salary. I can skip my days off and make an extra $191.00/day salary. I will make $60k this year hauling groceries on a pretty easy schedule. That is a d**n good deal.

As a former over the road driver, for K and B, all the complaints written here are true, the only people who can argue this fact, are the recruiters who are paid on each individual they can get to drive for K and B for a month or two, K and B still calls me once in a while asking me if i want to come back and drive for them, they got a hell of a lot of nerve. I really never met people like this befor. I grew up in Santa Ana Calif, so I been paper f**ked befor but these people specilise, honestly i'm too old to really care, but the main thing that really bothered me I mean beside all the true complaints here is that when i went to turn the truck in at there sioux city yard, one of the recruters opened the door and jumped in the truck and told me " hurry up and get my s**t out of the truck", I never did them wrong.. Trust me on this drivers, if I did not have previous grudes that i am working on it would not be beyond me to walk into k and b and open fire, they got it comin, b*******,

Mike your weak your not a trucker throw away your cdl lets face your weak and cant cut you piss and moan cuz a company made you run hard wah wah wah keeping your logs tight does not necessarily mean running illeagal ot means no goofing off guy basically you run 11 or close to it as possible and take no more then a ten and thats how it should be for all companies you run hard your a driver so shut up and drive or get out of the cab 4.5 yrs exp means no exp your just a baby and have no right to a complaint or a voice so what someone knocked on your door when you was sleeping i already had my trl dropped b4 i took my ten hooked to the other trl in the morning i went straight to the bunk while i was getting unloaded they say they want you present but i never was when i was mty went to the closest truck stop finished my 10 your forgetting the under 15 mi or 15 min rule when does not have to be logged which was put in there simply for that so truckers can find a safe haven after loading and unloading. You wanna complain about running illegal try running for 26 hrs straight make it look like 10 or running two to three log books at a time. I never had stuff like that with k and b. You just need to learn how to be a truck driver and run hard and runout your 11 daily. I still wish i worked for k and b but i had to go back to idaho on part of my grandfather having a stroke and suffering from dimentia they dont hire out of idaho unfortunately. Dont complain about a company that runs their drivers like real drivers just cuz you wanna run like a puss. But figuring since you from oregon only pansies and queers come from oregon so just shut up

And everything you said was true. They did the same to me back on 2005. Fired me for hurting my back. I sued and won! But it took two years. As far as operations, that was norm. Lack of sleep. I suppose if I had proper rest, I would not have injured my back. Hmmmmm? There meat loads are worth more than your life. Yes, if the carrier is late, they actually can get charged for the value of the load. Apparently, that is worth more than a driver's life, and the traveling public. Move forward with the Fed's investigating. Its not the first time. That is why they changed their name to K&B. Do some research.

I'm looking into differant companies that I may be interested into getting hired on with. I noticed an ad for this company that appealed to me. So, like always, I googled the company, and like always, found a few people here with a list of complaints.
Call me foolish, but I think there are 3 sides to every coin. Yes, 3. Yours, his, and mine. From the outside looking in, I see that all the promises made in their job listing are true. Lots of miles!
Call me naive, foolish, even wreckless, but reading all this has moved K&B to the top of my list and I will be calling them Monday. This job seems ideal for me. I have no wife or children. No ties to any real place to call home. I'm a drifter with a work ethic that makes me go bored crazy if I'm not making money.

it is this kind of attitude that keeps people like k&b in business.although keeping the customer happy is important, this"do whatever it takes to get the job done"puts all the responsibility on the driver.and puts him/her in a situation where they are pressured to not follow safety regulations.those regulations are put in place for a reason.and that attitude is why,in every major city in the united states, there are attorneys advertising"we go after bad drivers" on billboards by the interstate.it is not the trucking company's job to make you follow the regulations.remember one thing,YOU have the ultimate responsibility to maintain that truck in a safe manner.and it will be YOU sitting in a prison cell for vehicular manslaughter should the worse happen. not the owner of the company, not the dispatcher, not the safety director.YOU!this company thrives on the fact that there are people who will take the attitude you describe to the fullest extreme.not caring if you,or your family suffers.and not caring if the public suffers,as well.as long as the load gets there on time and they get their money.there was an old saying that still holds true in this case,"poor planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on my part".i'll give you this and let you think about it.h*o many times has a dispatcher told you that"if you don't get this load there, the plant is going to shut down." or,"i have a driver who has a family emergency and needs to get home, can you take his load for him?"just to find out that the plant doesn't have any place in the warehouse to put the load because they are over stocked, and the "family emergency was,one of his crony drivers wanted to be home to go to the beach or the mountains for the weekend?that's their"emergencies".YOU are the one responsible for the safe and legal operation of that truck.and YOU are the one who is going to bare the burden of the punishment.no matter what the customer, the dispatcher,or anyone else tells you.these people don't seem to understand this.or,simply don't care.as long as they get their profit, they will throw you under the bus in a new york second.this has been proven tie after time.by all these complaints against them.there cannot be that many bad drivers out there.so the odds are on the side of the drivers in this case, not the company.

Relays in middle of breaks are very common with K&B. Shipper breaks are very common too. 4 hours dealing with shippers is considered 4 hours of a 10 hour break. What u just posted is illegal logging.

Like several others who have posted complaints on the site, I have had the worst experience of my professional life with K & B Transport. I chose to work at K & B because their hiring process was fast and they promised descent pay and hometime. They portrayed themselves as a very "family friendly" company. It did not take long to figure out that what they promised and what they delivered were two different things.
I was driving dedicated for the southeast division, Sara Lee, out of a Macon, Georgia. I had been home briefly, and as always, I parked my truck at the Sara Lee terminal for my two days at home. While home, I started having chest pains. I went to the hospital and was written out of work for several days. I was never fired and I never quit. As a matter of fact, I returned to pick up my truck and ran as normal until I was told that the company had lost the account for Sara Lee. At that time I was given the option to go back OTR, apply with another trucking company or take a severance package which was minimal. I chose to leave the company.
Upon applying with another company, I found out that K & B listed two accidents, which never occurred. They said that I left my truck at an unauthorized location without permission and several other violations that never took place. Not only that, but I've checked my DAC several times since leaving K & B and it keeps changing. What K & B has reported on my DAC is the sole reason that I have been unable to get another truck driving job with a descent company. They have out-right lied and that has caused me to be unable to support myself & my family at times.
I have read complaint after complaint about other drivers dealings with this company. There must be something that can be done about this companies obvious lack of integrity and their blatant violations of employee rights.
Sincerely,
Chris K.

i noticed that this person states that the equipment was well maintained.i got news for him.if you call using house switches(not rated for ase equipment)to operate the apu,or having a fuel tank in the right side step for "kerosene" to power the bunk heater because they can't figure out how to properly install an insulated, proper sized fuel line to the fuel tank just behind that step, and install the controls for that apu all over the cab and sleeper instead of one central location,i guess the equipment was okay by your sub standards.but i can tell you(and, yes,i AM a licensed mechanic by trade)this is totally substandard for d.o.t. operation.it would seem that the mechanics at k&b got their training from jiffy lube instead of an ase training program(no offense to jiffy lube)

It's funny that the last poster, even in his first paragraph, basically stated that yeah, sometimes you have to keep the log book tight? Isn't that slang for "illegal" or "creative log-keeping 101?" That driver might have been willing to risk their CDL, but I'm not.
The fueling? That was K & B's request. I told them it was fine, but they wanted more fuel "just in case" it became an issue. Ok, again...not driving down the road to another fuel location when I'm out of hours for the day, period. Should be the end of that discussion.
Yes, they did keep the trucks up pretty well and even had APU's on most of them. Kudos to them on that one.
The other driver? When it comes to my CDL, I do it legal. I'm not some fool that would risk his CDL just to make money and keep my company happy. I don't care if the customer is unreasonable, when it comes to driving, when my 11 hours is up, it's up. No discussion needed for that, unless you're a driver that runs illegal as a normal way of life.
I'm legal, you're not....ok, enough said.

I worked for K&B from 11/2009 to 03/2011. The only reason I left was to try my hand at independent contractor work.
I was very pleased with my employment. Sure, from time to time, I was a little disgruntled b/c a load may have required a tighter delivery time and I had to cut things tight log book wise. Remember, that's set by the customer, not KB. As for the complaint about "using up all of your time" doing the required pick-up/drop off at Tyson, if you know what you're doing you can get it done in 20 mins. Boom, done.
As for the reefer fuel-up complaint, um...you had 1/4 tank left, right? Reefer burns about 1 gallon an hour, those tanks are 50 gallons. You had 15 hours left before you truly had to fuel. What's the problem with that? Also, it takes 10 minutes tops to do a relay, even if it is in the middle of your 10 hr break, the other driver knocks on your door, you can ALREADY be prepared for the relay by dropping your landing gear and unhooking your air hoses as soon as you park. THen it takes five seconds to unlatch the fifth wheel and then pull forward. Boom, you're done in a few minutes and back to sleep soon after.
Not to mention, KB supplies the trucks with good equipment and keeps up obsessively with maintenance. (This was my experience, at least) There's not a lot of companies out there who supply power inverters, APUs, and CBs in the truck already. And no other company I worked for would put you up in a hotel to rest while the truck was in the shop. Usually, you'd have to find a chair or a piece of the floor to try and rest. Additionally, they kept me busy. I never had any complaints with that.
Also, I was always home (even when I took time off away from home, like I did in Texas) the EXACT day I requested the time off.
Also, they make you pay for tolls and stuff at first out of your pay because I was told that drivers would get that money, not as an advance, and they ended up using it for their own expenses for whatever reasons they want. Well, some guys got caught and put an end to that. I even ran across a couple drivers who told me they used to do that. Really? I got enough pay to not have to worry or even think about playing the system like that.
Simply put, yes in every job you're going to be frustrated. You're gonna get angry. It comes with every job, every where, no matter what your occupation. What you're complaining about, in my honest opinion, is trivial and is the whining of a typical fat trucker who tends to be lazy. I could be wrong, but I've heard complaints from hundreds of truckers, from every company out there, and they all where these morbidly obese short tempered guys who seemed to want to find others to blame for their problems. Sometimes, all you have to do is look in the mirror.
I mean, David, did you even think about how much you messed up that other driver by making him take YOUR trailer two miles down the road to fuel and come back? No...just me me me and I I I. Pretty selfish man. Sometimes, things aren't "perfect" for you, but it's all what you make of it. Think about it.

yes! this is all absolutely correct!! they did the same thing to my husband! they flew him to Iowa, he worked maybe a whole 2 weeks of this bs, and he wouldn't play by their illegal rules either. and yes, they sure did ask him to make a false log, or enter false log entries. yes, they did call him during his 10 hr breaks to get up and work. ILLEGAL!!!!!
I can't remember if they bought him a ticket or not..I'm thinking not, because we didn't have enough for him to bring all of his belongings, so it had to be left behind. They basically stranded him in Iowa to find his own way back. They took him to the greyhound and that was it.
somehow, I found this site, and I filed a complaint on here on his behalf, and they called us and threatened to sue us. that never happened because they knew it was true!! they even threatened us to delete the post, or they will sue. well, once you post on here, it can't be deleted. haha funny thing was...I didn't have a name, or contact number on here. somehow they knew who was writing about them. very strange. when they called, my husband said, what are you talking about. I didn't write anything about you. technically he was correct. I did. I wasn't the employee...LOL
bottom line. DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY! unless you like to run illegal, then go for it. it's your fines and license if you get caught. sucka!

Very well put...and sadly true. Personally, I believe most of upper management with K & B should be indicted and charged with numerous felonies, safety violations (both to employees and the general public) and made to pay for their illegal ways.
All I can do is try to get people who are researching online about K & B Transportation, the facts and data so that they can avoid the scam, pitfalls and extreme hardship on their families.
ALL who have complaints to files should post here, AND contact the following EACH TIME.
Your elected official in Congress
Your State's Attorney General's Office
The U.S. Department of Transportation, Motor Carrier Safety
The U.S. Department of Labor
When you speak or write to these officials, let them know what has happened, in your own words, the violations that happened, or that they attempted to get you to do, AND refer them to Qualcomm's 6 month-backup system for comparing LOGS to the complaints. Keep copies of everything. When you go in to TALK with any management at K & B, have a TAPE RECORDER OUT IN THE OPEN. If they openly admit they refuse to talk to you like that...well, you have your answer. :)
Good luck my fellow drivers!

David in Beaverton is honestly has nothing better and more productive to do than post rants on this web-site. He habitually posts on this web-site because he is a very bitter person. Go to Google.com, do an advanced search, in the search bar for web-site to search type www.ripoffreport.com, then search "Dave Beaverton, OR". Before you take any of these ramblings seriously, just take a look at the plethora of complaints that this guy has. If something doesn't go his way, he files a complaint.
In regards to the complaints to Congress and the DOT, that is more than fine. We have yet to hear from them, but if we do, we will welcome them to check out our operations; we simply have nothing to hide. Drivers are not allowed to drive in violation of the hours-of-service regulations. We have a disciplinary process for drivers that drive illegally and if they are habitual violators, we terminate their employment.
For one to make a statement regarding an accident that "I have a strong feeling that the K&B driver was driving fatigued" is simply ignorant without have any of the facts of the situation at your disposal. That's no better than hearing that a semi and a 4 wheeler were in an accident and stating "I bet the trucker was at fault"; it just makes you look like an idiot.
Dave is a lazy, bitter person who has nothing better to do than complain about former employers from his mother's basement (that's me making an assumption about David from Beaverton without having all the facts - ironic, isn't it?!). I wish him the best of luck at making a living out of this venture.

David from Beaverton has a long history of complaining about former employers and seems to live for this kind of stuff. I don't know if I would call that being a productive member of society, but to each their own. I can only dream of the day where I have nothing better to do than rant about things that didn't go my way as a result of my own laziness and stupidity on a random web-site. Talk about a fantasy! David got fired from K&B Transportation because he didn't meet the standards we have for all of our drivers, plain and simple.
In regards to getting Congress and the DOT to come to our offices, well all is quiet so far, but we welcome them to come and check out our operations. They've been here before and I'm sure they will be here again. We run an honest operation and we do not allow our drivers to operate outside the parameters of the hours-of-service regulations; we have steps in place to terminate drivers that do drive illegally. If a driver has any problems with anyone even suggesting for them to run illegally, they can go straight to the log department with a complaint. For one to say they "have a strong feeling that the K&B driver was fatigued" and that was the cause of an accident they heard about is simply ignorant. This is an assumption that has been made without having any facts aside from the fact that there was an accident.
The only time anyone is left at a truck stop without a bus ticket is when they are dishonest with recruiting before they come to orientation, fail a drug test, or, as David mentioned, they made a personal decision that they do not want to work for us. We pay for their ride up, put them through orientation, and give them a place to sleep - if they decide they don't want to work for us after we go through this entire process without even giving the company a chance, then they are no longer our responsibility. I don't understand how a company can be expected to pay for a person's ride home after they walk out on a company? Explain to me how this makes any business sense? David from Beaverton has zero common sense and loves to complain about others due to his lack of wherewithal to make it in the world.
Good luck with finding something to do with your time aside from ranting on this web-site from your mother's basement, David. We all look forward to hearing from you again in the near future.

Yes! Finally, after a long process of filing complaints with Congress, the U.S. Department of Transportation is investigating this rotten excuse for a trucking company! I think I steered them in the correct direction for their investigation to an area that K & B Can't "sanitize." :)

To further show you how K & B Transportation breaks the law, I was terminated on 10-6-2009. Under Nebraska employment law, they were to have my final paycheck in my hands no later than Friday the 9th. I called them on Friday and they told me my check was being mailed out that day. Ok, so today is the 14th, and NO CHECK. I called them today about this and they told me they didn't mail it out until yesterday, the 13th! Yes, I've filed a complaint with U.S. Dept of Labor! They just don't care about the law and scoff at it in several ways.
When I called today, Mike R. told me he was irritated about the "nasty" posting I put up here about K & B and their bad and illegal practices. I told him what I put here was true. He told me that "we have nothing further to talk about," and hung up. They'll do that a lot over there ...they'll hang up like little kids when you tell them they've done something wrong.
When I spoke with payroll about this issue, she told me that she had mailed my check (actually told me the postal service picked it up) on MONDAY, which was a federal holiday! Came to find out from her assistant that it wasn't mailed til yesterday. However, the payroll gal got mad when I told her it couldn't have gone out Monday and she hung up like a little spoiled brat in my opinion!
