Kars 4 Kids - Kars For Kids Add me to the list Lakewood, New Jersey
I donated a car and recieved the receipt and the "free getaway" vacation voucher in the mail. It was then I decided to do some checking on the vacation voucher (which is a scam in its own right) and led me to the Kars 4 Kids scam reports. I did not check this charity and should have. I expect they skirt the law and aren't doing anything really illegal, but it seems that everyone gets the same form letter providing the $500 tax rebate regardless of the actual value of the vehicle.

Corrections regarding the so-called $500 tax rebate

1. There is no "$500 tax rebate". It is a tax deduction, not a tax rebate.
2. By law, if the actual value is over $500 but the charity sells a car for under $500, then they must issue a letter for only $500, regardless of the actual value. They cannot issue one for the actual value, unless either (a) it is under $500, (b) they sold the car for the actual value, or (c) they kept the car to use, instead of selling it. If you want to claim the actual value on your taxes, then you must give the car to a charity that wants to use the car and does not plan to sell it.
