I purchased a pair of diamond earrings in June of 2000 from Kay Jewelers in Southwest Plaza.  I have been faithfully taking the earrings into Kay jewelers every 6 months to have the prongs and the backing checked.

September 14, 2009 I took the earrings in for their 6 month check.  I told them I thought the back was stripped on my earring.  She checked the earrings and stated they checked out fine.

On October 4th, I got home from the Race For The Cure to discover I had lost the earring. On October 5th I went to Kay jewelers with my proof that I had been taking the earrings in every 6 months to be checked and that the person who checked my earrings said they looked fine.  I told them they should replace the earring since I felt it was their fault for telling me the earrings looked fine.  She told me there was nothing she could but would give me 20% off on another earring & increase the value of the one earring I had left.  I had no choice but to except this offer since a new pair at another store would have cost me $1500 - $2000.  I paid the $788 grudgingly and left.  She told me I did not have to purchase a new extended warranty since I already had it.

I contacted the Kay's corporate office at 1-800-877-8169 and filed a complaint.  Theresa got back with me on 10/08/09 stating there was nothing they could do since the manager at Kay Jewelers in Southwest Plaza denied ever having this discussion with me.  They bascially came down to her word against mine.

I feel they have poor customer service and in this economy should keep the customers they presently have Happy.  I also feel I was ripped of $788.00

Sterling Inc. c/o Mark Light, C.E.O. 375 Ghent Rd. Fairlawn, OH 44333 United States 08 December 2009 RE: Sterling Inc., dba Kay Jewelers Account: xxxxxx6527 / Christopher A. N. Mr. Mark Light I would today light to enlighten you as to the failure of your company to uphold its product and service and credit reporting obligations on my account. First I tried in vane to correct the matter on the merchandise that I purchase to NO RESOLVE and I was stuck with a faulty One Thousand Dollar watch and ruined credit. I have since settled the matter with your accounting department in full and yet your company is refuses to remove the CHARGE OFF to all three of my credit bureaus. This has been a long a disgusting process with Kay Jewelers and I am not a happy camper. I have told many of my family and friends never to use Kay, Jared, and or Sterling for ANY of there needs. I am also going to start a blog and you can go to www.ripoffreport.com I will be spreading the word there as well until the matter of my credit is RESTORED IN FULL. Your company is the WORST in customer service, product service, and overall business I have ever dealt with. I have a letter releasing me of the obligations and I refuse to pay for an item that was never rectified in full and to make it worse I even purchased your lackluster WARRANTY which apparently is about worthless as the paper it is printed on. I will in my campaign in the next several month, weeks, and or years find a way to put the GOOD WORD out as to just how Sterling, Kay, and/or Jared does business. I have written twice to you before and this time I am faxing it hopefully this will get your attention. I just want what is fair YOU GOT YOUR CASH I WANT MY CREDIT RESTORED AS PAID OR EVEN BETTER DELETED FROM MY BUREAUS! Respectfully, Christopher Allan N. P.S. Ignore this and I will have my attorney contact you next with a defamation suit!

From their point of view, how would they know a person did not just say they lost it so they could get additional jewelry. Besides, the mount may have been OK when they checked it and something happened in the meantime.

I think they did right by offering a discount.  I'm not sure I would have.

You know whether you are honest or not, but they don't.

Lost merchandise is generally not covered......

Lost merchandise is generally not covered under ANY warranty. It's unfortunate that you lost the earring but that's not something that any warranty would ever cover. If you felt that the backing needed to be replaced then you should have insisted upon that when you were having the jewelery serviced.

It sucks I know but that's the way it works. When I was in the Army my civilian glasses were destroyed by fire and they said my warranty did not cover complete incineration!
