Kay Jewelers Lost my ring and gave me another, better option, now they want it back! Rocky River, Ohio
I wanted to upgrade my bridal set. We traded in my whole set to have anew set with my original one carat stone set in the center. First problem it took them a month to move the stone. Second, when i picked it up it looked different, smaller, shinier and just different. I asked the girll are you sure this is my stone? "Yes", she said , "isn't it gorgeous?" Yes, it is I can't believe its mine. So suspiciously, I took it to another jeweler, who said it was almost a carat,-- mine was for sure a carat. But the incllusions were similar to mine. So he said probably its yours and it was just cut long instead of deep.--- We had no original papers, we were young and stupid when we bought the first one.
So weeks pass and on Christmas eve they call my husband and say," we gave you the wrong ring you need to bring it back." hey accidentally gave me a 12,000 Leo diomand ring. They sais the person who got my ring took theirs to a jeweler and they couldnt see the serial numbers so they knew they had the wrong ring. They told us our ring was in akron or maybe niles, ohio. They also said we need to bring the ring back and it may take a3 weeks or so to get mine back. My husband said no way. miraculously the next day they said the ring was there, so could we bring the ring back. Well with no paperwork or serial numbers how can they prove its mine? It has also been gone for a month! We said we gave them our bridal set in good faith it would be taken care of and now we have no confidence that we will be able to get our original stone back. So sorry its your fault,he said",Kay jewelers needs to eat this one." They said, Blah blah bah........ "ok I guess if your keeping it your keeping it, you may be getting a call from our lawyers." We said -- FINE.
Thank you for all the people who reported them for abuse it helped me make my decision. They always make the consumer take it in the a*s when they make a mistake, and we have no advocate. Well this time let them take it in the *ss. The little guy won this time. Let them sue us. They lost my f'n ring. theat won't hold up anywhere. Never trust a corporate jeweler. it is worth the extra money you pay at a private jeweler.

Demand a full explanation from corporate IN WRITING. Verbal explanations mean NOTHING. If they refuse then the issue is closed and keep the ring you were given. If they do provide a formal explanation tell them your time and trouble is worth substantiallymore than a poor excuse. At the very least you deserve a stone upgrade, say to 1.5 carats at a respectable VVSI/H grading. I suspect they took advantage of your lack of diamond knowledge and originally gave you a substantially lower grade stone. Make sure you havethe upgradeformally appraised and the serial # burned onto the diamonds girdle.
They obviously have NO WAY to prove what ringwas originallyyours. Since they didn't take a laser fingerprint when the stone was sold you would be taking their word for it. Very reassuring, huh?
Keep in mind that the retail jewelry business operates at rather obscene profit levels. A diamond ring that wholesales for $1000 will be stickered at $2500-3000 in the display case. If they want the Leo back they can cough up the upgrade and appraisal with very little effort. If they agree to this make sure it is in WRITING. Verbal promises/agreementsare worthless.
If their lawyer tries the intimidation tactic and sends a threat letter you really need to scan the letter and black out your names/addresses and post it here. It will be priceless. Make sure the local news media gets wind of this fiasco. They live for stories like this.
