My son received a gift card for his birthday in May 2008. We did have a localstore located in East Providence, RI but it was closed. I went to the web site to see if I could make a purchase from the web site or the nearest store, which is located in a MA mall. When I researched how to rediem my gift card I received this message from the online site:

Gift Cards

Please note that as of January 1, 2009,* KB Toys, Inc. is no longer accepting KB Toys, Inc. gift cards in their stores. *Stores in NY, TN, MI, VT, MO, CT, HI, OR and WA will stop accepting KB Toys, Inc. gift cards as of January 12, 2009.

For Gift Cards Purchased in a KB Toys Store

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept KB gift cards nor are they available for purchase on our website. Please note, KB Toys gift cards can still be used for purchases in your local KB Toys Store. If you currently have a KB gift card, please follow the guidelines below so we may assist you further.

The back of the card states that; "The store credit does not expire and no dormancy fees will not be charged." It also states that; "This Store Credit is issued by and represented by an obligation of KB Toys Gift Card, Inc."

I was willing to drive the 30+ miles to go to the nearest store to redeem however that is not an option. Please advise.

So I now have a an 8 yo who cannot use his $15.00 birthday gift card. I also want to note they do carry the symbol of the BBB on their site.

You are right the Gift Card never expires IF the store remains in business. However, once a store declares Bankruptcy any gift cards are basically worthless. KB Toys filed Chapter 11 in late 2008. As a result they are being liquidated. Your best hope is that at some point another company takes them over and it is worked out where the gift card is accepted. But right now that does not look like it is going to happen, so don't hold your breath.
