I'm on fixed income and obtained a keybank debit card for online purchases as I reside in a remote area with no resources, my balance of $65(a lot to me) was zeroed in a 24 hr period by a malicious hacker using what I finally identified with the free security tool snoopfree.com as the Canadian dumant keylogger to access $1 xxx porn sites.

I informed the keybank manager of the keylogger and as a former insider in the adult entertainment industry I simply had no want or need for internet porn we all have a hard enough time trying to keep them from filling our in boxes daily.

I contacted the companies where the charges were incurred filling them in on my background and they immediately took all charges off returning the full balance to my account, regardless of this the keybank manager still refused to refund my money or issued another card!

Because she is management there are no higher ups, the sad part is not that it cost me more than the card balance trying to rectify the matter it's that after crossing all the T's and dotting every I one idiot's refusal to accept reality throws consumer protection out the window and by law we are powerless.

When you log on to the internet, particularly through small private ISP service providers you are wide open to every system weakness between your machine and the so called secure bank system anyone competent knows Microsoft's constant updates and "security fixes" verifies this as did the verizon i-phone hack

refunded fees

The correct thing to do in  this situation would have been to give you a new debit card however the fees that you incurred weren't the fault of the bank. In order to waive the fees you received you would have needed to bring the bank some written notice from the company stating they wrongly took the money from your account or a police report stating that you didn't authorize the money to be removed from your account.

I would also suggest that you NOT use a debit card.

The Oct 2007 Consumer Reports reports on credit cards vs debit cards vs checks and so forth. Various banks are also ranked for how well (or how badly) they treat customers. Worth a read at your library.

Also you need some "protection" for your computer because you do not want anyone placing a keylogger on your computer. These things will call home with your information. There are many protection tools available and some very, very good protection programs are free. The Sept 2007 Consumer Reports discusses computer security programs and rankings are provided.

I have bumped into a few mislabeled porn sites and the software on my computer alerts me and prevents registery changes and the scammer programs from loading when these scum try to deposit their crud on my machine.

Everyone has a boss unless you are dealing with the CEO. Carefully check your terms & conditions first, and then start contacting bank officials.

I would never use a bank issued debit card on the internet

In fact, I don't even have a debit card from either of my banks. I have a visa with a small limit...if someone steals my number and makes an unauthorized purchase I know it's going to cost me no more than 50 bucks and the inconvenience of having to wait for a new card in the mail. I also have a PayPal account with a PayPal debit card. It's free to sign up for the account and get the debit card and they do not charge you to add funds from your bank account. This works EXACTLY like a charge card. The advantage is that it's only valid for the amount of money that I PUT IN THE ACCOUNT. It does not automatically pull money from my bank account when I use the card, and my banking information is NEVER disclosed when I make a purchase either with the account or with the card. This I use for gas and meals on trips as well as online purchases. If someone steals that or I lose the card...they're only getting the Paypal account balance and my bank account information and money are safe!
