Our local Ladies Workout Express club closed. In response to our request to cancel our 3 year contracts we were told we have to go to one of the other clubs which is within a 10 mile radius of our local club.

Consumers don't have the right to choose where they go to the gym? We chose our location because of convenience. Calls to customer service resulted in customer disservice for many of us.

Our club owner has closed her email account so we're left to fight this on our own. She advised us we could get our contracts cancelled. Was this plain ignorance, misplaced optimism or an outright lie?

One member was lucky enough to get her contract cancelled after she appealed to the legal department at headquarters. No one else has had that success.

Lady of America boasts 600+ locations with over 1,000,000 members. If they're so large, why not do the right thing and honor the requests of a few who would like to exercise their right to choose where they go to the gym.

WARNING to all potential gym goers - never allow yourself to be talked into signing a contract with Ladies Workout Express, or any of the clubs associated with this franchise. I'm sure the 50 or so of us in this particular club can't be the first and only ones experiencing this ripoff.

Contract cancelled

The owner said you could get your contract cancelled. What did the contract say?

Every health club I have joined in the past (several Bally's, Gold's etc.) specifically states in their contract that you cannot cancel due to closure of one location if there is another within a reasonable distance. Not exact wording but words to that effect.

The contracts for these clubs are usually 2-3 pages and most people are so tempted by a nice facility, marketing offers, etc. that they simply sign the contract without reading it.

A contract is a contract. If there are provisions that an individual "location" is not a guarantee then nothing was done wrong by the company.

LWE is wonderful! Not all clubs would do what yours did.

It's unfortunate that happened to you. Others should know that not all LWE clubs are like yours. The owners at the club I go to are very understanding about life situations and will freeze memberships if requested. It sounds like you had a problem with this particular manager and NOT the company as a whole.
