A friend of mine was admitted to Lakeside triage for mental evaluation. He told his VA doctor that he didn't want to live in Memphis anymore. This psychology student decided that he didn't want to live anymore. So Dr Perkins of the Memphis VA hospital sent 3 police officers to my friends house and hauled him to Lakeside triage. We shall call him Mr.D for future references. Upon entering Lakeside triage he was met with a terrible odor of urine and human feces. I got the front door trying to visit him. The smell was overwhelming. Mr D. was stripped of all his possessions and placed in a 10' x 30' holding cell with 15 others. There are no beds, Only hard Block house chairs. There are not enough of them. Imagine a Alzheimer's patient covered in urine and feces sitting down on you while you try to catch a nap. Mr D. has terminal Cancer. He is on medications for pain and nausea. Mr D. was denied his pain medication for 24 hours. he was denied his nausea medications for the same amount of time. At Lakeside triage the staff are rude and mistreat the patients. Mr. D. was notified three times that his paper work had been faxed to MMHI. Then he was told that it is really being faxed this time. Mr. D was informed that MMHI has 1 hour to respond to the papers. They took 4 1/2. You cannot have water at lakeside. You have to beg for it and you had better keep your cup. They will not give another. There was no restroom facilities in the men's section because a homeless person kept stooping it up and letting it overflow. Nobody gets to keep their shoes. Nice mess to walk in I can imagine. The food in non describable. Think of rancid dumpster slop food that a dog won't eat. You almost have the description. The staff continuously play games with the patients minds. They blatantly lie to the patients. They will not tell the patient what is happening with them. They are rude to family and Attorneys also. The SPCA has rules that prohibit animals from being treated like humans are at Lakeside Triage. After 26 hours of dehumanizing treatment Mr.D. was released within 5 minutes of getting to MMHI. They did not understand why he was not evaluated and released at Lakeside triage. Lakeside triage charged $7,600.00 for this treatment. Something has to be done about this situation. Humans cannot continue to be mistreated like this. If Mr. D didn't have a mental problem before he went in, he does now. Remember this part. Mr. D has TERMINAL CANCER. He will succumb to it within 6 months. They were afraid he was going to kill himself. So they abused him.

The person that filed the rebuttal is an employee and was kissing a*s to gain favor with their employers. I have been to Lakeside Triage. I put a gun to my head and pulled the trigger. The gun misfired. They abused me at every chance. I had a puking problem and was taking Phenergan to stop it. The Nurse practitioner OD'd me on the drug when I started puking there. Then she tried to say I had taken too much before I arrived. I was taken to the emergency section and put on suicide watch. I was charged for the ER. My attorney got them to drop the bill under threat of a law suit. While I was in Triage they had criminals and homeless people with us. One of the criminals straightened a paperclip out and hid it so he could get out of the cuffs later. I saw people forced to give blood test and others put into the restraint rooms for simple reasons like not wanting to eat the slop they served. The food was cold sandwiches and unsweetened drinks. They would not allow utensils to eat with. The person who filed the rebuttal made it sound like the Waldorf. The homeless and mental patients would  overflow the one toilet so we had to walk in filth. When they came to take me to MMHI. I was restrained with belt cuffs and put in a van. When I got to MMHI I was placed in a waiting room for 10 minutes and was taken to see a DR. He asked me one question. Did I want to hurt myself or others. When I said no, I was released then and there on the spot. If it took 5 hours like the rebuttal person said that would only be able to do 1 1/2 patients per day. They only had ONE Doctor.  The person that filed the rebuttal is a bald
faced liar.

PS. If you would like to see the bill. Leave an address dummy.

exaggeration/lie?

I understand the frustration, one might have to the process, just as a side note the triage area has been closed and a newer system is in place ( not for any bad reasons, they were just underbid for the job of triage), it remains a lengthy process.

I have had many experiences with Lakeside triage, and never have I seen anything like this person described. the process is lengthy I admit that, but not the 26 hours as said, the longest I have ever seen is 12 hours. Pt are only segregated if violence is an issue, there is no distinction b/t rich or poor, a little bit sick or a lot sick. All items are removed, even if one patient might not use the strings (or shoe as a weapon) to injure themselves, someone else might. The food served there is EXACTLY the same as the Reginald Medical Center "the MED" The MED also provides food to MMHI as well, very high quality even for hospital food.

There is a misconception about "admitting" Lakeside Triage was not an admitting facility, by their very name they screen pt, only, ie they only provide the first certification for hospitalization, another Dr outside Lakeside Triage must perform another/2nd Cert. ( BY LAW). As far as a patient leaving Lakeside and going to MMHI and being released in 5 minutes, totally not true. I can't even say that's an exaggeration. I work at MMHI and it takes 1-2+ hours just to process a pt, and determine whether or not they stay or go.

As to Lakeside charging Mr.D $7,600.  show me the bill, cause if that's true he had to receive medications or other treatment not just an evaluation for Psychiatric admission, esp if he was sent to MMHI.

Here's what I believe, this writer cares for MR D. & was unhappy with certain aspects of his care, but don't make up or overly exaggerate things. Good safe care is provided to mental health clients, they may not agree to what or how its done, but its good safe care none the less.

I have dedicated my professional careerer to helping the mentally ill. It offends me when persons who don't know the system and exaggerates about negative aspects of someone's care.
