We were moving out in the middle of August after a two year stint at Landings. We were quoted a partial month's rent of $798 plus water. Then in August, Landings withdrew over $1673 out of my bank account instead. When I brought this to the apartment office's attention, I was repeatedly reassured that they will refund the amount in excess in full, but that administratively it would be simpler if they treated it as rent credit instead.

However, the apartment management treated the amount in question as simply extra security deposit and used it to refurbish the apartment for things that should be covered under normal wear (a small and light stain on the kitchen floor does not warrant full floor replacement). Not only did Landings use up the full amount of my security deposit, they further used over $200 of the overcharged rent. Additionally, instead of the $798 given to me in a written notice, Landings increased the partial month rent to $851.

To recap, Landings illegally obtained funds from my bank account under false pretenses, then they used the amount for personal gains. The act itself is financial fraud. The vehicle through which money was transferred constitutes wire fraud. This is an ongoing dispute and might be subject to criminal complaint if Landings and its parent company, Hills Properties do not amend all wrongs involved.
