The Liberty Tax Service prepared my taxes in 2001. This past July I recieved a letter from the Internal Revenue stating that the taxes had an error and they corrected it and now we owe a sum of money, plus fees and penalties.

After I recieved this letter I immediately phoned the tax service. I spoke to a receptionist there and she assured me they would take care of the problem by the end of the week. It has now been 7 weeks and I can not get in touch with these people. After daily phone calls, emails and certified letter (that was picked up) there has been no response from them. In my emails and letters I have written the urgency of this matter still with no response from them.

How to handle such disputes

I'm a franchisee of Liberty in another part of the company and I'd like to help you resolve the issue you're having. There are not excuses for mistakes, but there are ways to address them.

Liberty Tax Service offices are owned by individual franchisees. If you cannot resolve the problem at the individual office level, you should call Liberty's corporate headquarters in Virginia Beach, VA. Their phone number is 1-800-790-3863. They will contact the local office on your behalf and push the problem to a resolution.

Liberty Tax Service offers a money back guarantee, as well as a performance guarantee. If you are charged penalties and interest, the company's guarantee covers those. In addition, if you feel you did not receive the service you deserved you may also request a refund of your fees. Every Libery office is contractually required to honor the company's money-back guarantee.

I'm sorry to hear you have had such problems with one of the company's 1400 offices that operated in 2004, but I assure you that the company will address your problem if you aproach it as I've described. As the fasted growing tax service in the U.S., Liberty does not allow such situations to continue unresolved if it knows about them. They cannot afford to.
