If you didn't ask for a refund or a check, yet someone sends you a large check anyway, doesn't any alams go off in you head?
If you think it is legitamite, then take it to your bank. Ask them to scan the MICR account numbers on the bottom. If they don't scan, it is a phoney laser check with no MICR encoding on the bottom.
Next, if it is a real check, have your bank manager contact the issuing bank to see if the check is legitimate and there are sufficient funds in the account to cover the check.
If all of that passes, then ask yourself, "why would someone send me a check I wasn't expecting?". If you are cashing checks sent to you by mistake, you might be put in a tight spot later.
Just stop and think about it first.
