I went to Lindero Canyon Dental Group for a 6 month checkup and teeth cleaning. The doctor looked at my teeth for two minutes and then tried to sell me a "deep cleaning", which is really a scaling and root planing. This is a very expensive and painful procedure. It is recommended for people with peridontal disease - which I absolutely do not have. I brush three times a day, floss, and use a waterpik.

This dentist tried to use scare stories to get me to have this procedure, up to and including threat of death from bacteria! Then, when I would not let her do this unneeded procedure, I told her I just wanted a normal cleaning, she spent five minutes cleaning my teeth! Normally a good cleaning takes at least 20 minutes. And, voila, the insurance company gets charged for a full cleaning! 

Apparently this type of selling of unnecessary and expensive services is getting very common in the dental world, so be aware. There appears to be no control of this type of behavior among dentists. They can just lie to the insurance companies and no one is checking if the procedure is really needed, or if the procedure was correctly done.
