Locks of Love claims to be a charity that helps children with hairloss due to cancer, Alopecia and other diseases. But in reality, they are for-profit organization that is only out for media attention.

I am speaking to you as a sufferer of Alopecia since the age of 14 (a disease that causes hairloss), and as someone who has personally dealt with this organization.

Locks of Love is NOT endorsed by either the American Cancer Society nor the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. They also have a complaint against them from the Better Business Bureau for not abiding by the guidelines of a non-profit organization.

The wigs that they make are poor quality and fall apart easily. They are made for young children, who quickly grow out of them, opposed to adolescents or teens. They also do not use all the hair they receive as donations, or at least do not give out nearly enough wigs for the hair they receive. They have been accused of selling some of the hair they receive to retail wig manufacturers for profit.

It bothers me deeply to see them glorified in newspapers, on TV, and supported by so many salons, when their practices are so questionable.

DO NOT donate your hair to Locks of Love. Do not be fooled by their sappy stories on TV talk shows.

If you want to help a child with hair loss, consider (another non-profit), or contributing financially to a child in your area. 2% of the population suffers from Alopecia, and countless more from other diseases that cause hair loss. There is someone near you that can use your help. Be sure to help wisely.
