Cat Cruelty Case of Lois Masso of Malaron Persian
a CFA show sponsor

Date: Thu Mar 24, 2005 1:35 pm
Subject: Animal Cruelty Case - Champaign, Illinois

"I am writing to inform readers of a very devastating animal cruelty case of a persian breeder in Champaign, IL. Lois Masso, Malaron Persians charges are pending at this time.

Over 60 persian cats were removed from her home due to extreme cases of neglect. In some cases, cats were found clinging to life, and one actually found dead in its cage. Cages were filled with fecal matter, little or no food or water.

Cats were being fed raw hamburger meat or extremely poor quality food that left their teeth in extremely poor condition. All these cats suffered from very severe upper respiratory conditions and infections, chronic gingivitis, dry crusted fecal matter and urine were covered on many of the cats as well as massive amounts of matting on the fur, leaving no choice but to shave the cat. Cats suffered from various skin conditions leaving some almost completely hairless. Their eyes were left with eye secretions that had dried and crusted them almost completely closed, as well as corneal ulcers, oral ulcers, eye lesions, mouth lesions and conjunctivitis. Some were coughing blood and also suffered urinary tract infections.

The vast majority of her Persians were found doubled up in cages in her basement with no ventilation These abominable conditions are too indescribable for words it leaves one speechless and heartbroken to know how these beautiful animals were treated in such a cruel and inhumane way. Lois Masso is a disgrace to the Persian breeding community and cat lovers in general. Malaron Persians should be barred from participating in all show activities as well as prohibited from registering any feline, transferring ownership, placement of any advertising and should also be fined the largest fine possible for the cruel and inhumane treatment of felines. Unfortunately she was previously the president of the Illini Cat Club which sponsors CFA Shows. Malaron Persians claims to be a licensed cattery - she is no longer.

I live in Champaign and am aware of the Lois Masso situation. The sad thing is that I was made aware of the condition those cats were living in back in 2001, and called the City of Champaign Animal Control to report the neglect, overcrowding and overall filth in the house. Animal Control called me back once to get my story, but after that I couldn't get an update as to when something was going to be done. I tried repeatedly to follow-up and was hopeful that the appropriate action was taken. When this story made the news last year, I was steaming mad that those cats were still living in that awful environment. If they would have acted back when I first called them, maybe a few of their lives would have been spared. Shame on our Animal Control!!! They really dropped the ball on this one!!
