You of course didn't just hand over $500 and say that their word is good enough..or did you?
So what did you sign when you handed over the deposit? Did it say it was refundable?
Why did they refuse to return it?

The deposit was your pledge to purchase the car. The seller may have lost a sale because their acceptance of the deposit was their commitment to take the car off the market. You failed to honor the terms of the agreement and therefore should not expect a refund.
