Louisa Ritchotte Before sending money for T.V.I want to know if it is not a scam. Ripoff Moosup Connecticut
I recieved a Time Sensitive Document on the 8th of December.I am suppose to get back with Sweepstakes Clearinghouse by December 24th to be entitiled to the T.V., along with this notice I'm supose to send $37.96 required for immediate delivery. Before I do this I wuld like to know if this is a true gift or am I just getting taken advantage of. As an individual of 60 years old every penny I have is important to me and I just don't have this kind of money to give even if I do need the T.V.. Can anyone help me find out if this is a real gift???

Personally, I would throw the mail away. But, then I might be throwing away a TV for $40.
So - whatever you decide to do - ****DON'T SEND A CHECK. ****DON'T SEND CREDIT CARD INFORMATION. ****DON'T SEND BANKING ACCOUNT INFORMATION.
Send a money order, or use a pre-paid debit card with just that amount, or thereabouts, on it.
If you use a prepaid debit card, don't have a penny more on it than you can afford TO LOSE.
If you send ANYTHING that pertains to a credit card account, or Heaven Forbid!, YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, you WILL be charged more, sooner or later, somewhere along the way.
If you send a check, the company can just maintain your routing and account number in their files, and then "claim" you authorized withdrawals from your bank account. Yes, you CAN dispute this, and may win, but that cash is effectively gone until such a time as an unethical company decides to put it back. If it's an out-and-out scam, they will NEVER put it back.
Thomas made excellent points, about them delivering it C.O.D., and also that you probably would be better served by saving up for a TV YOU CHOOSE.
So, if you can contact the company, ask them:
- Will you send it C.O.D.?
- Can I submit a money order?
If they say no - ask, why not? A money order IS MONEY. What is wrong with getting what THEY ask for, as payment for this gift?
Oh yes, if they suggest Western Union, or Money Gram - HANG UP IMMEDIATELY! This is presuming you can even call them, to begin with.
In any event, WU and MG are excellent services for transmitting cash TO PEOPLE YOU KNOW. But those you don't know - DON'T EVER DO IT. It is, for all useful purposes, impossible to get your money back if you send it in this manner.
Whatever you decide, just please, do not give them access to your banking or credit card information. That's a fatal mistake, as too many reports on this site attest to. Hope you get a TV you love, very soon!!

My best guess is that you would never see the TV, you would never see that $37.96 again, and if you did send the "$37.96 required for immediate delivery" they would then ask for some more money for some other reason. If it were my decision I would skip it.
TV's are getting less expensive all the time. Two days ago I saw a Vizio 32" LCD HDTV for $700 new. Non-HD TV's are a lot less, so if I were you I would save a little money every month for a new TV ....
