I have hired Lucas Lawn and Yard Care to prepare my lawn for the winter. They were supposed to de-thatch my lawn and over seed it. It was not planned that they will bring dirt to cover the seeds, as Mr Lucas told us this is how the golf courses do. Total cost $210.

Workers came and only cut the grass before seeding. This is not de-thatching, which is supposed to remove all the dead grass. After the operation, the ground was still covered with dead grass and dead weeds. I talked to the workers who said it is not a problem. As I do not know much about lawns, I decided to trust them and handed my check.

After a week, very little new grass was showing. I called Mr Lucas. He came and said to not worry, it will grow. Four days later, still nothing. I do not understand how grass seeds can grow if they do not touch the ground. The ground being shocked by thatch.
Since the window to have a lawn ready for the winter is very short, I called Mr Lucas again. Winters in Arizona are lovely and this is when we can enjoy our backyard. He said that he will have his employees come the following day. They will manually rake the dead weeds covering the ground, cover with dirt they will bring and seed again.

The following day... phone call from Mr Lucas. Three of his employees had called in sick and he was not able to send anyone else to do the job before the following week. He also suggested that I purchase the dirt myself. As I asked why, he said that he does not know where is his dirt and that he does not have time to look as he is leaving for the week-end. I thought that was not correct at all. Not only they initially did not do the job as agreed, but Mr Lucas was not efficient at fixing the problem. He prefers to enjoy his week-end instead of helping customers who entrusted him with their hard earned money. Bad, bad business practice.

I was obliged to cancel the next week appointment, as we need to go out of town on business. I cannot leave my property open while I am away, and after that, it will be too late for the seeds to grow.

The result is that we were obliged to do the job ourselves in emergency. We went to purchase the dirt and more seeds. In one afternoon, my spouse and myself had to do the hard work of raking the dead grass, laying the dirt and seeding.

If we have paid someone to do the work, it is because we both have health problem and prefer to not do it ourselves. I do not see how I can get my money back from Mr Lucas as I cancelled the appointment. But he made it impossible for me to accept any further delay.

I am out of $210 dollars and I hope that Mr Lucas will enjoy them, because this is the last time I will call him for a job. I think that problems can happens, what makes the difference is how they are fixed. In this situation, I think that Mr Lucas (who is a young guy) could have stopped by a local hardware store, pick up a couple bags of dirt and come to finish the job himself. This would have been the right thing to do. Instead, he now has a bad business report on him. Shame, shame on Lucas Lawn and Yard care in Phoenix, Arizona.

Maskedcucumber wrote a very detailed account of what happened but failed to add what makes Lucas Lawn Care not at fault.

We hade provided many other services for her over 17 months or so. None of witch she complained about. One she raved about and was very happy after the work was complete.

I gave her an est. over the phone for the winter lawn. I did not look at the grass at that time, I had been to her house several other times on other jobs so I didn't need to look at how much grass she had (900sq ft or so). I told her what the general process to put in a winter lawn was and that it was the same as the golf courses process. Dethatch, scalp, seed, set timer (water being the most inportant part).

My crew did the job, no dethatch because the lawn was very thin and half dead in places and bare dirt in others. Scalping was done. Seeding was done and extra seed was given to them to put down 1 week later per my instructions.

1 week later she called and I stopped by to look at yard and timer. Timer was all wrong not nearly enough water (she had changed it) So I said more seed would be needed and I gave more seed to her and added minutes and start times to the timer.

1 week later she called again and I stopped by again.....grass still not thick. Water was OFF they had a valve broken and a repair man was going to fix it. Again water problem. This is when I said on Wed. or Mon. the next week I would have a crew over to redo the whole job and put soil on top because the customer was saing over and over soil was the problem, when in all rality the water was the problem. The soil was not included in the original est. She had some soil at here house and I said if I can get more in time, (2 bags) then I would have the crew bring it with them for no charge. [For Free]

That wed. we were short staffed and only the scheduled jobs could be done not any extra jobs [for free] could be squeezed in. But that Mon. we had a great opeaning and the crew would be by. That is when I said for her to get the soil (2 bags) because I was going on a family vacation and if anything went wrong I wanted to make sure the soil was on site. Even if I had died on that trip the crew would have showed up, the schedule was done and out to the opening manager and all notes and map were made. Maskedcucumber called over the weekend and cancled the visit, not me and she never asked for her money back.

If you go to lucaslawnandyard.com you will see some of this years green and thick winter lawns that we put in for other people.

Lastly for all those that put in winter grass..... WATER, WATER, WATER we do live in a desert.

I know that Lucas Lawn Care did everything possible to help fix the broblem, extra free seed, extra setting of the timer two times, ever an extra visit to redo the whole job, but she canceled that scheduled visit not me.
